For the record the northern ireland assembly was always going to collapse at the end of this month, power sharing has been officially collapsed since the start of this year and "the institutions" evaporate and be replaced by direct rule from Westminster. Its just smart optics to blame this entirely on May's deal with the DUP which does finally kill any prospects for a last minute solution, which was not going to happen anyway

The troubles wont restart. We're just going to have no government probably for some time until another bridging agreement is eventually negotiated whenever that is. The price for that agreement, which may not come for years now, will probably be heftier than it once was.

The DUP not taking their seats would give the Tories the majority, yes. Why would the DUP do that, though, if they don't get anything from it? And if they're getting something from it, they're still disrupting the GFA. You just slightly reorientate the problem, you don't solve it.

So they're literal crazy people who actually want to restart the Troubles? I was not expecting that honestly.

They're not quite at that point, but they do want to push what they can get away with right up to the limit. You just need to look at the recent collapse of power sharing to see that they are absolutely a party of brinksmanship.

May probably wont be able to avoid having to bring in international mediators now, the Irish government will push for it and the Americans will probably get a bit testy on the issue.

I don't know much about UK or especially Irish politics but I have done some reading on Ian Paisley. He controlled DUP for most of its existence, and was an antisemitic weirdo that adamantly opposed NI power-sharing agreements for almost his entire life.

I mean, as posted upthread, people were bombing schoolchildren over this poo poo.

Yeah but then he became one of the "chuckle brothers" and was specifically forced out of the leadership as the inner circle thought he had gone too soft

The DUP makes money from the fragile peace. Lets not forget there is more than a whiff of corruption about em. They want money coming in and businesses reaping profits. Bombs going off is bad for business.

Power-sharing collapsing is manageable but they are not going to call for vigilantes to take to the streets and the execution of gerry adams like the old days

For this week, yes. You will basically never hear about the DUP in the news again after the next few weeks, so they might end up being a great choice for the Tories as it gets them a government that is pretty much 100% Conservative Party in the eyes of the public without having to actually win the seats.

If Labour is smart, they won't let this happen. Their best option to torpedo the Tories would be to meticulously document every scrap of pork that floats over the Irish sea to buy DUP votes and to bring it up incessantly in the media and PMQs. With full-on Austerity it shouldn't take too long for a few Tory backbenchers to get fed up with their constituents constantly asking why their local schools and rural bus services have been defunded while the William of Orange Secondary School just received a state-of-the-art new sports field and rifle range. Even half a dozen rebels could sink the ship.

Sure thing back in the 70s but I would genuinely be surprised if it reignited violently. People are still passionate but according to all the evidence (and I have discussed this with people in NI) the people willing to actually revert to armed struggle are limited to a double digit number of bitter old dudes in pubs.
