Why not sell it on eBay? Dolls don't survive 20 years in the attic very well, and they go out of style. My mum largely failed to interest my kid in her & my old toys that she's kept in the attic.

The decision to save the dolls for future generations was not mine to make.

I'd rather just give them all to Goodwill and clear $500 on my taxes.

In my mother-in-law's case, her father abandoned them early on and it was pretty much survival mode from there. There wasn't time or money for nice things and when she started having granddaughters, there was nothing to share from her childhood. So here's a toy line with a faux semblance of history and a healthy dose of Good Old Days.

There's probably a sociological term for the privilege better-off families have in regards to family histories and things of value to pass on to subsequent generations. All I know is going to her house is like living in a Cracker Barrel gift shop.

I leased a car through the Uber leasing program (bad idea I know) and was barely able to afford it and not be a full time driving slave. Managed to get into two different wrecks ( one that was not my fault and in the rear and one that was my fault in the front). The insurance company issued me two different checks for the repairs of the vehicle. I took the vehicle to a local repair shop, while simultaneously being weeks behind on my lease payment ( to the point where would they come repo it) as I had been unable to work with it in that condition. I then used the checks the insurance company sent me to go and purchase a decent used vehicle so I could continue to work and not get screwed with a 950 monthly lease payment. I knew the repo people would try to go get the car so I called Uber and told them where the car was. The shop just called me asking where the checks are because the cars been ready for a week. Everyone wants money for it or the car it self. My question is: how screwed am I? And who is most likely coming to screw me? And is there any way out of this?

Uber's business model is "keep lowering payments for drivers and hope autonomous cars are usable before they all quit." Squeezing extra money out of the drivers with leases & loans is just the cherry on top.

I (21/F) am not sure if I should help this man (70+/M) sell his handmade collectible doll-houses on eBay

quote:

(USA)

Hello PF! I hope I'm in the right sub for this topic, if not please feel free to lead me in the right direction.

I have been a regular patron at a bar near my job for the last two months. Recently, I met an elderly man who told me he made collectible doll houses as a hobby. He said he has about 15 of them sitting in his house and he has no way to get rid of them, but he asked me to sell them for him.

They run from $295 to $995. He emphasized to me that they are NOT toys, they are for decoration/collectibles. He offered me 15% commission on each one I can sell online. So far, he's given me developed photos of the doll houses, the corresponding names and the prices.

So here is the kicker:

this man is basically computer illiterate. He doesn't use email or PayPal. He doesn't even own a computer. The photos he gave me are not even digital so I have to scan them and upload them onto some kind of hard drive.

He doesn't want me to come and see them myself to take my own photos, so I can only use the photos he's given me. We have to meet at the same bar to go over the same things every time. I've repeatedly asked him to give me a list of materials he's used, dimensions, etc because this is all important information for potential eBay listings.

He is quite stubborn and difficult to work with and doesn't seem to understand how this all works. Given eBay takes a cut of every sale, and he is only giving me 15% commission, I am wondering Reddit if this seems like too low of commission or too difficult of a scenario. I'm thinking, if he only sells half of the doll houses, I may only make about $400, or possibly even less. I don't even know what the market is for collectible doll houses.

I am considering pulling out because I don't want to stress myself out trying to work with him. On the other hand, I feel bad that he doesn't know how to get rid of all of these gorgeous collectible doll houses and I DO feel like I could help, not to mention the extra cash which could be nice.

Also some things are really off-putting about him. He says he wants my SSN and personal information about me and he is also very prejudice/offensive/ a bigot. Like today, when he gave me the walgreens photos, I was sitting with my friend who is a drag queen and the old man was very rude and even went as far as to sit almost 10 seats away from me.

should I pursue this opportunity?

ETA: Just wanted to add that he did say he would take care of the shipping aspect, though I'm unsure if shipping is the best route for such expensive and fragile dollhouses.

TL;DR A computer illiterate elderly man wants me to sell his handmade/hand painted collectible doll houses online for 15% commission but he is difficult to work with and I'm not sure if the possible earnings are worth my time.
Could this be a scam? We just don't know.

I don't see the scam. Horribly convoluted identity theft? Potential kidnapping and rape? It just sounds like a weird old man she probably shouldn't work with because it won't be worth her time.

Throwaway account for personal reasons. Hoping someone can guide me: I'm married and work in IT. I make $72,000/year, been in my job for just shy of 1 year. 2% discretionary bonus yearly. I also work as a remote support System Admin for a company out of state making $40/hr. averagin 10 hours a week when there is work (dry spell right now). I also operate my own business charging hourly for work (only have gained one job so far) hoping to branch out if it takes off. I also sell products on ebay for extra money when possible and can make about $100/sale. Here's where it gets tough, my expenses are insane. I pay almost $2k/month for rent. I have two at home nannies (long story) one ft and one pt. The ft get $415/week after tax, the pt get $204/week. I pay $200 month for my phone bill. My power is around $230/month. My cable is around $140/month (half of it covered in my rent). I then have 2 high interest auto loans (around $600 each). I get by but it's a struggle. I'm trying to see where I should cut but my wife and I are losing our minds. I've started Financial Peace University for my 2nd time and I'm hoping to straighten this out. Can anybody offer some insight? I'm really at a loss here and trying to decrease expenses and get my stuff together. I'm hoping to buy a house before my lease runs up but I don't know how quickly I can save up. Help!

As of right now, there is very little conversation in the thread. And at least one person has said "seems reasonable" with regard to the multiple nannies. I was thinking some kind of special needs child(ren), but he never mentions kids, or any other expenses for them, so you could be right.

Yeah he goes over all his costs but nowhere in there is like 'food for kids' or 'college fund for kids'. It's gonna be like "My wife insists her 146 year old mother stay with us, all she can do is poo and scream." or "We have a very special shih tzu that has very severe separation anxiety"

Hello, I need escape from poverty. Looking to discuss all my options. I have schizo effective disorder, and I take medication, which make me dumb because it slows down my thinking. I tried going to university, but because I withdraw 2 years in a row they cut my funding the student loan. I had to go on disability, because my medicine is like $500 dollars for a month supply. Right now I am doing much better. I am working at a factory 2 times a week. Sometimes I feel like I am going to faint because I don't know, my mind just feels like zoning out and constant brain fog. The disability cut money from my cheque because I am working. The more I work the more they cut. I can't even save money, because if I get more then $5000 they kick me out of the program.
I pay money to student loans and the amount I owe is going down. I try to learn programming in my spare time, but it becomes very boring after awhile. I need to commit more time to it. Be more disciplined and hard working.
I don't know what I am going to do. I will probably read and improve my comprehension skills, but my mind feels broken. I feel like I am going to faint any day now at work. Maybe have a seizure after fainting. Doctors are no help. They just want me to be lazy.
I am overweight 250lbs, and gaining weight fast, but I try and go to gym and fight it.
Anyways if you have any advice or tips please share.

If you're comparing us to the usa that's a low loving bar to be "better than". Her doctors are free but drugs are not automatically free. In Ontario if you're on disability you get free drug coverage for certain approved drugs but working will interfere with your benefits.

In any case, it's a super sad situation.

I'm going to guess Zyptexa/Olanzapine. That fits weight gain and dulled mind, even at low doses. I hate to think what it's like at higher doses.

Serious question, I thought Canada had "free" health care. How does one medication cost $500/mo there?
