For a backbench Tory MP who has no cabinet aspirations, what is to stop them rebelling on any piece of legislation, even a three-line whip? The Tories aren't in a position to kick any of their MPs out of the party, so what mechanism do they have to ensure Tory loyalty, especially on local issues that might be controversial in an MP's constituency?

I'm not sure the concerns about us hitting a high tide on youth vote are as significant as some worry. The tories are looking incompetent right now, a word that they really struggle with. Callousness doesn't hurt them much, even a light dusting of corruption is to be expected, but when they look loving useless they lose elections. Even if youth turnout tapered off there's no stream of people looking to vote for incompetent Tories. Also they're allying themselves with loving homophobic dinosaur-deniers.

This bit is pretty new, though (exceptions: Liberal (Democrats), Northern Ireland). Like, when I was first eligible to vote back in the 90s, Plaid and the SNP were not really a thing and the Lib Dems were the comedy joke never going to be in power option. It was still pretty much Tories vs Labour. Edit: a friend of mine made a really good point about those ultra blue London seats. They're all full of loving Russian and Chinese plutocrats and so on now (as opposed to British posh people) - who can't vote. Which means the council estates that are still in the area swing it for the good guys.

This is obviously anecdotal but I'm 25 and work in a really young company (outside of senior management, average age is probably like 26/27). On friday everyone was really jubilant and felt... powerful isn't quite the right word but it's in the ballpark. Most people see this result as a victory and winning tends to energise people. Not to mention the DUP's social conservatism is going to piss off almost every young person in the uk.

If there's an election really soon I wonder if tactical voting is going to go way up on account of how stupidly easy it will be. Like, if you're wondering who's going to be in first and second place? Remember two months ago? When we had exactly the same vote? Probably that.
