Did he say anything about the Customs Union? I would almost say that is more important, and I had watched May's government discussing leaving it with some trepidation.

Edit: vv He was still speaking up for Lynton Crosby, so good is relative I think.

For a backbench Tory MP who has no cabinet aspirations, what is to stop them rebelling on any piece of legislation, even a three-line whip? The Tories aren't in a position to kick any of their MPs out of the party, so what mechanism do they have to ensure Tory loyalty, especially on local issues that might be controversial in an MP's constituency?

Literally, absolutely, completely nothing.

Also, that Corbyn line about having youth on his side was really good.

Depends on how historical you mean. Folk have long memories when it comes to stuff like the Troubles, the miner's strikes, Thatcher cunting over half the country and whatnot, but outside of sectarianism in Northern Ireland and Scotland's fluctuating designs on becoming a nation in its own right I reckon the only other historical motor that comes immediately to mind in British politics is imperial nostalgia. Oh and the monarchy too I guess, but that's kind of covered by the latter imo.

Yeah, that's what I mean. Like, people seem to stick to some semblance of these broad historical principles and remember the past in UK politics. In America, other than the Civil War people have the memory of a goldfish and care about their party allegiance more than history. Look at for example, West Virginia, they've thrown away their heritage, the miners who fought the Battle of Blair Mountain would be ashamed of them. I wonder if it's due to the age of the UK in comparison, better education, because you have many more viable parties, so people can actually politically "specialize", or some combination.

Or maybe it's just dumb to compare apples and orange(men)s like this. ¯\_(ツ)_/¯

Absolutely nothing, which is why what May is attempting to do is so absurd. If they think things are a shitshow right now, just wait until Parliament reconvenes. It's gonna be amazing.

I'm not sure the concerns about us hitting a high tide on youth vote are as significant as some worry. The tories are looking incompetent right now, a word that they really struggle with. Callousness doesn't hurt them much, even a light dusting of corruption is to be expected, but when they look loving useless they lose elections. Even if youth turnout tapered off there's no stream of people looking to vote for incompetent Tories.

Phew, well if Corbyn's stalemate forces that as the outcome (and the DUP will almost certainly back this position, given their view on the border with Ireland) then he will have done more to protect the long-term prosperity of the country than May would have managed with a majority.

This bit is pretty new, though (exceptions: Liberal (Democrats), Northern Ireland). Like, when I was first eligible to vote back in the 90s, Plaid and the SNP were not really a thing and the Lib Dems were the comedy joke never going to be in power option. It was still pretty much Tories vs Labour.

Edit: a friend of mine made a really good point about those ultra blue London seats. They're all full of loving Russian and Chinese plutocrats and so on now (as opposed to British posh people) - who can't vote. Which means the council estates that are still in the area swing it for the good guys.

This is obviously anecdotal but I'm 25 and work in a really young company (outside of senior management, average age is probably like 26/27). On friday everyone was really jubilant and felt... powerful isn't quite the right word but it's in the ballpark. Most people see this result as a victory and winning tends to energise people. Not to mention the DUP's social conservatism is going to piss off almost every young person in the uk.

If there's an election really soon I wonder if tactical voting is going to go way up on account of how stupidly easy it will be. Like, if you're wondering who's going to be in first and second place? Remember two months ago? When we had exactly the same vote? Probably that.

No idea who she was - she sneeringly said that the Tories needed to post stuff on Instagram to win the election, that 'it's no wonder young people will vote for you if you bribe them with £27000 each', and that there needs to be a new election 'and if Corbyn wins that then I guess we accept we're a left of centre country and I can safely leave and live somewhere else.'
