It probably happened just after the deadball era (assuming we're calling that 1800s-1920). Most of the 20s through 40s have homerun rates/game that are less than half of what we have now, and there were also half as many teams so a full slate was only 8 games. I ran some numbers and if we assume 1 homerun/game on average, which meshes with that era, the likelihood of having 8 games with no homeruns is 1 in 2980. Roughly estimating 100 days/season having full schedules means it would be likely to happen in 30 seasons. In contrast, this season we have a HR rate of 2.46/game (!!!), and having 15 games with no homeruns is a 1 in 10^16 chance. So if it happened, it very likely wasn't anytime recently, but who knows. The Cubs do not appear to be a good team this year. Last year's playoffs broke Joe Maddon.

I feel like colleges should teach a class on querying baseball reference (as well as pro-football/basketball reference since they all do the same platform), cause man I feel like I never get enough out of that site. Also, I was in Seattle's Chinatown last night. So many Jays fans

In 9 hours I will be leaving for my first ever trip to the Hall of Fame. I'm stoked. Has anyone ever been? Any pointers? When I first started dating my girlfriend I mentioned to her that the Hall of Fame was one of my lifelong dreams, and for my birthday, she surprised me with this trip. I might no-shame cry when I get there.

Judge is huge for a baseballing man, and it's cool that he's great and all, but it's weird when people go into Andre The Giant style freakshow mode about him. Among the general populace it's unusual but not THAT unusual. 6'7 is "fair chances of finding someone else in the stadium that height" tall. I have a friend of almost 20 years who is the same height, and he lives in a tiny rear end low-density town, and he is not even the only person in the town who is that tall. I dunno. I don't mean to sound like a dick, I think the real story is that he is both an MLB player and very good. Craptacular! fucked around with this message at 10:56 on Jun 11, 2017 |

I went there for Ryne Sandberg's induction, which was complete insanity. The entire town was packed to the gills with people. I imagine on a normal week, the vibe is way more chill with a folksy small-town feel. My favorite part about going on induction weekend was the fact that you'd just be walking down the street and oh hey there's Dave Winfield, there's Yogi Berra, there's Rollie Fingers, just checking out the local shops like everyone else.
