I met MAF a bunch of times both in Pittsburgh and Wilkes-Barre and he could not have been nicer to fans. He was undeservedly poo poo on for years and I hope he understands what a key part he played in these two cups, and wish him the best of luck in his future endeavors.

I think a lot of vets in MAF's position could have and would have made a HUGE shitstorm about being benched for a rookie, especially with a NMC to back it up. MAF being outwardly super cool and supportive of the team while sitting on the bench for literally the first time in his entire life, even though inwardly he must have been loving seething about it, was a big contributing factor to the Penguins winning back-to-back Cups imo.

I think he still has a couple more good years left and I hope he gets to go somewhere that he can start more playoff games.

I don't know about undeserved. He's a genuinely super nice guy and that's great and all but he was also *the* reason for like four seasons in a row that they blew up spectacularly in the playoffs.

But he got them two cups in the end and played a much smaller part in last year's so you know I'm totally okay with all the Maf gifs at this point and hope he goes and does well for Vegas or whoever.

If they fired Bylsma after 2012 like they should have this is their 6th (at least) cup

This is true but also kinda unfair to MAF because those Bylsma teams were REALLY bad in their own end, especially when engaged in the "gently caress playing hockey let's punch everyone and scream at the refs instead" meltdown rode that was the Bylsma era's specialty. They didn't make life easy for a goalie and imo it would gently caress with any goalie's consistency after a while.

e: If you look over MAF's career year-by-year statlines he is actually one of the most consistent goalies ever which is hilarious. You never knew what the hell you were getting from game to game, but you always knew exactly what you were getting from year to year. The MAF ExperienceŽ

He was poo poo in 2012 against the Flyers. So was the entire goddamn team except maybe Jordan Staal. The rest, nope, can't blame him

That and if they'd gotten Maf a goalie coach earlier. Bales turned Maf around in a big way. He's been good and basically demon free ever since Bales took over as goalie coach. Apparently Meloche never told Maf to do basic poo poo like hold his post and not flop on every scramble.

Dramatically depends on who they'd have hired to replace him back then. When they finally did fire Bylsma they managed somehow to replace him with the literal worst coach in NHL history.

I really love Mike Sullivan and am probably going to write a long rambling post extolling his virtues sometime tomorrow, but tbh I'm still not 100% sure he's A Good Coach and not just A Competent Coach after years and years of very bad Penguins coaches.

From 09-10 to 12-13 Maf had a sub 900 save % every single year and I mean there were certainly other reasons the Pens failed but he was a big one.

But who the gently caress cares at this point he was instrumental in two Cup wins and had a good regular season at least for the other one.

But if they fired Bylsma back then there's a good chance they don't do the things they did (like pick up Kessel, pick up Sullivan, etc.), thus they may still have only 3 Cups.

You know what really hosed them in 2012, no offside review for that loving Briere goal. Never mind the "was his skate off the ice" poo poo, he was loving 3 feet offside.

Firing Shero may have been a bigger turning point than firing Bylsma really. Shero had/has a good knack for drafting young guys but was honestly a catastrophe at assembling an NHL team and thinks highly of the exact wrong kinds of skills and traits

So good luck with that Devils fans, I guess

I thought I remember Maf playing the first game or two. Maybe he just came in for relief.

Anyways that wasn't the season I pin on him but the 3 before that he was putrid. But like I said right now I don't much care :toot:

yeah there's no way these runs happen without trading scuderi and sutter, and dupuis' blood clots (which is really lovely for him as a person but probably really good for the penguins' cap situation)

also i'll bet shero would have extended orpik
