Yeah, my bad. I thought this Notch guy was somehow involved in GG so I kind of ran the two things together in my post. I have played a bit of Minecraft but I never knew anything about the guy who made it. I should probably just go read the Wikipedia article. (true fact: When I first asked what the heck Gamergate was on another forum, they told me I couldn't just read the Wikipedia article of it because it was biased and full of lies. I don't post there anymore) I'm getting into this channel called Folding Ideas which is pretty popular and well-known but I just learned about it because he talks a fair bit about superhero movies which I am also starting to watch more of. But he also had a video on Gamergate. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=5VtjZHC5Qyk Dan seems like a cool dude.

It seems to be around the time Minecraft's sales went into the millions and he stopped being a one-man operation that he gradually started being miserable as his tightly knit community transformed into a massive mainstream audience with demands. Eventually things culminated with him selling off the company to Microsoft on a whim (he literally announced his interest to sell over a tweet), burning a shitload of bridges in the process and then moving half across the world to rot away in a 50 million dollar mansion. This last part happened around the same time as Gamergate had started popping up and uh yeah... While Gamergate ended up being a huge preliminary run for the alt-right movements appearing online in the US in the 2016 election I wouldn't spend too much time effort reading up on it. Well I get the "why", it's just that I can't help but think this is all just so loving absurd. Is this going to be the odd, kinda funny, instigating moment some kid is going to learn about 100 years from now? Like how the Black Hand tried to assassinate Archduke Ferdinand, initially failed miserably, had a guy break his neck diving into 3 inches of water trying to escape, and the only guy who didn't go home to hang his head in shame, but instead decided to get a sandwich and a port to drown his sorrows in, ended up right next to the duke when his brand new auto-mobile stalled next to cafe he was at? "Mommy? Why did the USA collapse?" asks some 4th grader doing their history homework. "Well there was this lady named Zoe Quinn, and she made a game about depression, which seemed to piss off like half the world."

I legit want to see someone do a deep dive into the development of the "alt-right". I remember seeing the Fatpeoplehate thing pop up on reddit a few years ago, just past peak gamergate, and thinking that these guys are just desperate for an "acceptable" demographic to hate on. And before that, GG, the "chimp-ire", various old school edgy boards acting like 4chan, the "violent-acres" guy, there really is a series of controversies that lead directly to each other. And I think at least from GG to FPH to T_D people have looked into who the subscribers are on those places and there is ton of overlap. Overlap that goes well beyond "similar interests" and into "It's literally the same group of people jumping from one topic to the next refining their methods and honing in on the perfect topic". It's things like that which make me think Prester Jane is at least on the right track.

There was never any "culture war" because these reactionaries never had any real power to change anything. But there were still plenty of feminists and other decent human beings chased off YouTube and other places. I just re-watched one of Milo Stewart's video (this one) where he talks about the fact he doesn't know anyone who has ever been in his position before.Hundreds, even thousands of people dogging you every step of the way to tell you how worthless you are. probably the biggest thing that eats at notch is that he got insanely lucky with minecraft, which was just a clone of infiniminer by zachtronic. except that zach is a sollid game designer with a number of successful games under his belt, notch really just hit the jackpot with minecraft's massive success despite being kind of a bad game (no internal documentation, obscure mechanics, still no native mod support?) but it was hugely popular with children, which is like the holy grail of game publishing for the merch factor. but notch will never be able to replicate that success again. even if he actually gets another game off the ground and it succeeds it won't be even a tiny fraction as successful as minecraft was. it's almost like winning a lottery ticket except instead of just throwing down a few dollars you spent a good few years working on the thing. so his career as a game dev is basically over unless he can reinvent himself as some kind of consultant or dev guru which, uh, picking fights with women on twitter is not a good path fowards there. he could also just gently caress around and release weird games with no pressure for them to be any good but he hasn't released anything since

On one side the alt right ranges from the once obscure neo-reactionary and white separatist movements, to geeky subcultures like 4chan, to more mainstream manifestations such as the Trump-supporting gay libertarian Milo Yiannopolous. On the other side, a culture of struggle sessions and virtue signalling lurks behind a therapeutic language of trigger warnings and safe spaces. The feminist side of the online culture wars has its equally geeky subcultures right through to its mainstream expression. Kill All Normies explores some of the cultural genealogies and past parallels of these styles and subcultures, drawing from transgressive styles of 60s libertinism and conservative movements, to make the case for a rejection of the perpetual cultural turn.

In his latest video Sargon reveals that he basis his entire view of modern economies on.... The Wealth of Nations, which he finished reading a few weeks ago. Now as far as economic literature goes that is not the worst choice. Adam Smith had some quite loony beliefs but the Wealth of Nations is still very relevant when it comes to understanding the role of bond markets, inequality and taxation in statehood. However, to base your entire take on this is whoooooooosh... Widely inadequate to put it lightly. To then try to apply this limited understanding to the potential repercussions of a hard Brexit is complete lunacy.boner confessor posted:r/fatpeoplehate, just redditors posting pictures of fat people and mocking them endlessly. there was a particular focus on heavy women, extra so if she had dyed hair or other things that young people do, so it wasn't just about weight shaming but also weird misogyny and was a stealth platform for whining about SJWs Didn't GBS use to do this too?

The great thing about the 8chan child porn thing is that their primary ways of responding were: 1) We love unmoderated free speech! But also illegal stuff that gets reported is removed swiftly, so the rampant kiddie porn is not a problem. Also, many of the sexualized children aren't naked or being touched, therefore it's not even illegal. 2) Wow, Dan, look at child porn much? You sick freak! The monstrous #1 got kind of overshadowed by the hilariously idiotic and somehow more worthy of controversy #2. So the whole exposé turned into "man investigates terrible thing, is accused of being able to find terrible thing." Instead of, you know, how bastions of "unlimited free speech" on the internet are really just festering sores of full of reactionaries who drive everyone else away plus a bunch of actual illegal activity.
