Seems like with all the other stuff you have to do to make a proper video game come together "good writing" usually gets left by the wayside. Usually fine, but things can get downright embarrassing if they try to tackle something they just can't handle I guess alternately you kinda tell a story by way of what the game is like to play- oppressive atmosphere in Dark Souls comes to mind

Yeah it's probably possible to make a nuanced story so complex that it provides an interesting social commentary and a message that can be easily understood while also saying a lot of poignant stuff. But it's not feasible because the game only has a small amount of time/space to deliver that message to you, not to mention the skill it'd take to implement such a message.
