Do lalafells simply just not bend when they bow, or are they incapable of bending at all? The animations Ive seen lead me to believe the latter.

Not worth buying a fantasia over. (I may change my tune on this as I go through more cutscenes that do close-ups on my dude's goofy face.) Glad I held off on preordering until I get paid Thursday. Just got a 10% off voucher from GMG for SB, bringing it down to a 27% discount. And I'd like to extend my thanks again to the goons running to Goon Gear Drive 2017. Finished the MSQ last night, staying up way later than I should have on a work night. It did a surprisingly good job of leading to SB, which is something I had kind of wondered about going into it after learning what SB was about in general. I do have one thing that I'm kind of curious about though. We have fought and defeated a multitude of primals. We have fought and defeated the greatest technological marvel that the Empire was able to rebuild(using the expertise of a guy no longer working for them). We fought and defeated one of the oldest dragons in the world, and then beat his pure rage manifested. So, saying that, what the gently caress does the Empire have to throw at us that is at all threatening to the Warrior of Light? Even if we didn't get a new race I'm honestly surprised they don't add more face options to characters to entice people to buy fantasias. Maybe because of all the facial animations in emotes and cutscenes? Idk whats involved under the hood.

The thing about FF14 is that there is no in text evidence to suggest an escalation of power. Leviathan is theoretically no stronger or weaker than Ifrit. While in game mechanics terms that is obviously not true, it's largely not supported by the text that one is intrinsically more powerful than the other. Due to this, one has no reason to believe any of those fights were easy narratively speaking. Thus, the next antagonist doesn't need to be the biggest most world ending threat ever to be a valid antagonist as in WoW. Captain Oblivious fucked around with this message at 18:56 on Jun 12, 2017 |

Terper posted:I suppose that is technically true. Lulz. Corrected The lack of overt escalation of power levels is my favorite thing in FF14 though. Aside from exceptions like Ultima/Thordan/Omega/Bahamut which are overtly treated as exceptional threats, thus their role as raid bosses or end of story boss fights, everything is treated about the same. It's a threat, it doesn't need to be any more complicated than that. We don't need scouters to rank them.

While in game mechanics terms that is obviously not true, it's largely not supported by the text that one is intrinsically more powerful than the other. The game does seem to acknowledge that it's an escalating problem, and the hard modes for the original fights at least did make the point that more crystals were being used than before (and hw patch material covered how beast tribes were finding a new source of crystals), so I do think we're supposed to see it as a continually worsening situation. The escalation obviously isn't meant to be 1:1 with the increase in power of our characters mechanically, and every game runs into this situation with random mobs being tougher than past endgame content, so some level of narrative disconnect is assumed, but I do think we're supposed to see the threat as getting bigger over time. Having just beaten Alexander recently, I'm pretty sure I remember someone saying he was draining aether faster than any other primal so far. Sort of yes, sort of no. The narrative is explicit that Ifrit EX is stronger than Ifrit HM, iterations of the SAME Primal, but there is no indication given that one Primal is intrinsically more powerful than another save for Elder Primals like Alexander and Bahamut. That quantity of crystals and the power of belief behind a Primal can make it especially potent is acknowledged in the narrative, but they're intentionally avoiding ranking threats I think. The vagueness helps preserve a sense of scale and avoid the problem where the issues of the common man become totally irrelevant.

It could have just been being arrogant because, well, Primal, but in ARR Garuda seemed to think she could easily defeat Ifrit and Titan together to absorb their aether to make herself stronger to fight the WoL. Plus, you know, we defeated the machine that tossed all 3 of them around like a stuffed toy. I'd also assume that Nidhogg, and especially the "Incarnation of hate with both eyes" Nidhogg, would be more powerful than any of the Primals we fought, particularly as those same eyes were what provided most of the actual power to summon Shinryu.

We can vaguely infer Nidhogg is an extra big deal (at the very least we know dragons seem to be Aether batteries of some kind) but the narrative does not tell us all previous trials were baby garbage by comparison or anything like that Also recall we only defeated Ultima due to Hydaelyns direct interference. The literal hand of god interceded to stop us from dying and to make it hurtable. Captain Oblivious fucked around with this message at 19:18 on Jun 12, 2017 |

Yeah I feel like this is the most accurate take. Ultima, Omega, Thordan, and Shinryu are clearly on a higher level than all currently known wild primal. It seems like the warrior of light is expected to just be stronger than any wild primal and a more balanced match with the man-made ones, though through anime values like friendship and teamwork we always win.
