Durian tastes like garlic, boiled until soft, and then sweetened. It's gross.

quote:If this wasted investment is subtracted from GDP, similar to a one-time write off under general accounting principles, then 8% growth would be 6.2%, and 6% growth would be 4.7%. There are other distortions in Chinese growth figures, but wasted investment is one of the most glaring. what does this even mean quote:There’s only one problem. My ticket cost about $30. Tickets on Amtrak for a ride of similar duration cost about $250, and Amtrak losses money. I personally love when people don't even spell/grammar check articles I mean, ok. The general points, this dude is not wrong on. China does finance on debt and honestly, a lot of their crap is wasteful. But this all goes apparently to his central point (which he barely mentions at all until the very end) is that the yuan is going to face a maximum devaluation because... of the above mentioned reasons? Or something. The thing with this article is it throws a lot of buzzwords around without really explaining them, so it looks all big and scary and anyone who doesn't understand the Chinese model or economy (which is probably 99% of people) will be worried about the COMING CHINA COLLAPSE

Anybody have any good thought-piece reads on how corruption takes root in society? Not really focused on China, but also looking at it in South America, Africa, and even places like Italy and Greece, and even historical cases of corruption and how some nations are able to avoid it.

It's less that corruption takes root and more that that's the default state of human society and only in incredibly rare/lucky circumstances does a less-corrupt government or society emerge but maybe it's only temporary and will revert to the norm?

Saving the character for Durian to your phone is helpful as well (if you can't memorize it). Also, sometimes people refer to it as "smelly fruit" 臭水果, so that might be a possible label alternative.

Baronjutter posted:It's less that corruption takes root and more that that's the default state of human society and only in incredibly rare/lucky circumstances does a less-corrupt government or society emerge but maybe it's only temporary and will revert to the norm? nah there's a number of known ways people can handle corrupt societies and make more transparent institutions. voltaire, locke, bacon, and to a somewhat lesser extent adam smith wrote a lot of thoughts on that stuff during the enlightenment. there's some more modern stuff but it all stems most directly from those enlightenment thinkers so it's important to be familiar with them first. their thoughts on the matter have generally borne out in that corruption is inversely proportional to the amount of accountability involved in a specific job. from a historical perspective, even the most corrupt 20th century+ western democratic administrations have been positively saintly compared to the rampant grift of their more totalitarian counterparts both historically and contemporally. the big hurdle basically comes in when you realize that governments only accept accountability when it's basically forced on them. most jobs have some sort of steward that impose accountability. your boss makes sure you don't steal poo poo from the shop, his regional manager makes sure he doesn't steal the night deposit etc. with governments, they don't have anything above them, so it only comes through popular outcry like the magna carta or outright blood-splattered revolt like the french revolution. i'll give you one guess as to which china will choose.

Yeah, I agree. Corruption is fundamentally based in exchanging gifts and favors, which is a very human thing to do. To suppress it we've had to do things like making "offering a gift" a serious crime (attempted bribery) so cautious people won't even try it.

Two of my Korean friends invited me to come to Korea with them for vacation. We went for two weeks, I had an absolutely amazing time. Since we have came back they have become really angry with me, they didn't really show it on vacation but now its gotten bad. To sum it up, when we went on vacation, I found it REALLY easy to hook up with women there. In America I would consider myself average looking and not that tall, but in Korea women found me REALLY hot. I think it is because there aren't many White people there so when women saw me they thought I was amazing and a lot of guys are shorter. I had a couple instances too where women left their boyfriends to dance with me. When we were there, I did my best to try to wingman for my friends, I would ask the girls I would meet if they had any friends for my guy friends but nothing really worked out. When we went out to clubs, my friends had a pretty crappy time. I didn't ditch them or anything for the trip. I am not sure what to do to make things better. These guys used to invite me to a lot of events now I feel like I am shut out. I think a lot of this has to do with racial jealousy in that they feel that I am taking their women. They have made comments before on how a lot of their fellow Korean women are only interested in White guys. I can see why it would hurt, but how is this on me :/ I didn't make it like this, I tried to help them out. And besides the nightlife part we still had a really good time together. I am not sure where to go from here. I want to be friends again. Tl;DR- I went to Korea had a great time. My Korean friends however did not and are upset they never hooked up with anyone.

From other people's korea reports Korean men under a certain age are driven to rage at the idea of "their" women wanting non-korean men. Both from this thread and a couple friends that did the english teaching thing in Korea they've all said it's impossible to have male korean friends and ever hook up with or interact with or receive the attention of korean women. Also they're too passive aggressive to ever say anything to your face, they'll just poo poo talk you behind your back and warn all women that you're an STD riddled drug addict rapist like all whites.

Today is the first typhoon/hurricane of the season hitting, and Shenzhen has been getting its water revenge as cha bu duo drain cleanings may or may not have occurred at some point before this. Road men have taken to removing manhole covers instead, since it's too late for them to half-rear end the jobs they were supposed to do beforehand. These pics are being passed around on Wechat/Weibo. This is at Chegongmiao station, a major metro interchange for office workers. It has like 3-4 levels, I am not sure, as I usually don't need to change trains here. I'm the millions who are still required to go to work or school on this day (which is everyone, as nothing closed in expectation). One of my friends works in real estate and said they are having an office movie party because they know that not a single person will come in today, but they are still required to sit there during office hours. This is over near Huaqiang Bei, since there is a small mountain run-off stream that flows nearby. I wonder what's the poop/Hep and rain ratio there. Finally, this is up the road from where I live (about 2 miles/4km away). I don't know how this person didn't see the sign that the underpass is 4.2 meters tall, and there was 1+ meters of water in it, but I am guessing a phone chat was involved during the process. EDIT: That happened in the STEM company area, but I am guessing that cheating your way through university and to get a CS degree doesn't really help with the whole logic, problem solving, and processing bits that come out of learning mathematics and physics.
