If you only pull the slide back a bit, it doesn't cycle a new cartridge. Doing it one-handed is cooler and an easy way to get some skin pinched.

I know next to nothing about guns and thought that pulling the slide back was enough to guarantee a round was chambered, but presumably you get misfeeds often enough for a serious shooter to want to check? I only noticed him do it once in the film so thought this was something unusual.

Plus the guns the goons had have been falling on the floor and getting knocked around. You'd want to give the thing a real quick check.

FYI, this is just one scene from a crazy US Navy training film about the dangers of liquid oxygen. The film did make its point though and was memorable so was it really crazy?
