A fine handcrafted artisan keyboard will have irregularities like that. Much like the impurities contained in the best diamonds or the artificial smoke flavoring added to Laphroaig, that's what makes it worth buying.

:siren: maxkey is now setup to run custom legends :siren:

new set on zfrontier, a few things before the reveal:
- the colors are... loud and weird
- they've stopped bundling the weird cherry novelties like they've been doing for a while, it's a new set of theme appropriate novs
- per the render. i think the set should have the same redundancies as mine
- it's $10 more than mine, presumably because of the novelties
- no idea why this isn't green
- turn around is getting shorter with a 2 month target cycle this time

are you that mainframe hacker guy?

So for secret santa I got a Kaypro 2000 and I really want to try and use the keyboard.

Here's what it looks like:

It apparently uses Cherry MX Black key switches

About all the information I can find comes from https://deskthority.net/photos-f62/vintage-kaypro-2000-keyboard-cherry-mx-blacks-t11976.html

the keyboard basically detaches:

I'd really like to use it, I was hoping I could just wire up a teensy to the cable that it comes with but have no idea where to start.

hook up with the deskthority threads where people have been using teensys (teensies? teensii?) to read inputs from terminal model m/f & beam spring boards:
https://deskthority.net/workshop-f7/xt-at-ps2-terminal-to-usb-converter-with-nkro-t2510.html
https://deskthority.net/workshop-f7/all-about-custom-keyboard-controllers-t2340.html

you're probably going to have to do a fair bit of signal capture and reverse engineering if your thing speaks it's own protocol, but it's plenty doable

Don't you just hate when you wind up in a store with people who are in a socioeconomic class that is pretty obviously about two levels lower than your own?
got another nearly pristine Apple Extended Keyboard II (Made in Japan) a couple days ago and cleaned it up to use on my other system at work

other than the space bar pads having melted and made the space bar stick (I just removed them, it's fine) the keyboard really seems to have never been exposed to UV—it's still pristine Apple Platinum

and with its Mitsumi key switches it feels wonderful, just like both of my other Made in Japan models, and distinctively nicer than my Alps damped models

also since the Macintosh 12-inch RGB Display atop the Mac LC it came with had a manufacture date of May 1991, I expect the keyboard is around 26 years old and probably spent over 20 of those years in storage (along with the monitor and ADB mouse and StyleWriter, none of which were yellowed at all and all of which work)

ok so what is the deal with the aekii? you arent the first to really talk it up, however i have two and have really not been impressed by them. they seemed kind of mushy and unsatisfying to use, not like my white complicated alps omnikey or my salmon alps iigs board. is there that much variance from board to board? maybe i should dig them out again to give them another shot, and pull some caps to see what exactly they have, if they're that worthwhile

do you actually have an AEK II, or do you have an AppleDesign Keyboard? because the latter are mushy because they're rubber dome; the AEK II uses real Alps (or in my case Mitsumi) key switches and are definitely clicky

well, i do have an AppleDesign keyboard too, but nah these are actual aekii

i did just play with em a bit, and they're better than i remembered, but still not as nice as the iigs ADB. might just be old and sticky/crappy whereas the ADB is pretty nice and snick-snack still

like, they def feel mechanical, but they dont feel good really

condition is everything w/ alps switches, just because the case looks clean doesnt mean the switches aren't totally worn out and full of dust. the dampened switches on the aek ii in particular are prone to this ive noticed

its just further proof that the AEK1 w/ orange alps is the premiere old apple keyboard

not my cup of tea, but i figure a couple of you might be down for this. 60%ish, halo switches, pbt caps, layers & a not bad case.
