A 21 year old defenseman was inconsistent? What a loving bum.

Darude - Adam Sandstorm posted:A 21 year old defenseman was inconsistent? What a loving bum. That's pretty generous. Inconsistent implies that he sometimes plays well. 11 points in 44 games doesn't indicate that he played well on offence, and his fancystat comparisons are people like Zack Bogosian and Erik Gudbranson. If he doesn't play well this upcoming year, the Oilers need to look elsewhere.

His points/60 at 5x5 had him at number 68 in the league for defensemen with 500 minutes or more.

If you look at literally every stat from 15/16 to 16/17 he made huge strides. He's fine.

Darnell Nurse in 2015/16 was not good, and should've been sent back to Bakersfield. Darnell Nurse in 2016/17 was much better, and earned his place in the line-up. Darnell Nurse in 2017/18 will be even better.

Benson Cunningham posted:I won't try to defend Matta this post season because his performance was indefensible. That said, he's gone through a lot in the past two years. Not just injuries, but surgery to remove malignant tumors as well. Prior to this year, he has actually been pretty good. If the story about him still needing to figure out his thyroid meds is true then I'd be willing to give him a pass. That said I still don't know even if he rebounds to where he was that his style is necessarily the most benefit to our system. I still think you put him in a system a bit more slow and deliberate and you'll be reading story after story about how he miraculously rebounds. Plus I think you get more out of a trade dealing Maatta than you would Hagelin.

seems pretty easy to pick to me: Thornton, Couture, Pavelski, Hertl, Karlsson, Tierney, and then either Hansen or Boedker Burns, Vlasic, Braun Jones

If you are wanting to watch hockey you should watch the Summit Series on youtube, this poo poo is incredibly entertaining and if you're like me, you don't know who won each game other than game 8. I'd pay a lot of money to watch this era of hockey in 4k on my bigass TV.

27 is the age you want to give up on a defenseman, for an older more expensive one.

i'm not saying they are similar players but consider, for example, victor hedman's first couple nhl seasons before you give up on a 21 year old defenseman

And it's funny that you guys are talking about Nurse who is 21-22 because I feel like Pens fans forget that Maatta is also 22 and he had loving cancer.

Do you have to protect a full 7+3 (or 8 skaters)? These are the Habs I would protect Plekanec, Patches, Galchenyuk, Gallagher, Danault, Hudon, Radulov Petry, Weber, Davidson or Beaulieu (Therrien hosed up Beaulieu pretty bad, I'm leaning toward Davidson) Carey The Montreal Canadiens front office will probably protect Shaw or Emelin instead.

If Matta does have screwed up thyroid numbers that would explain a lot. If that's the case, you'd have a far better argument for protecting him. On a different note, Is it under 2 years a pro that is exempt or under 2 years in the NHL?

Jamwad Hilder posted:He seems like he'll be a perfectly fine middle-six forward but nothing special. Statistically Athanasiou is actually really drat good. Over the past 2 seasons he's behind only Matthews in terms of goals/60 (min. 1000 minutes) and is #32 in points/60 at even strength. Obviously there is context missing from those numbers but he's also likely to improve since he's only 22 and he also has been skating alongside some pretty crappy Detroit forwards for most of his time there, often on the 3rd or 4th line. I'd say Athanasiou is likely a top line talent (if not now then soon) who is being held back by some questionable coaching decisions.

All I know is Nashville is going to go 4-4-1. No way they expose their first two pairings. Johansen and Forsberg are also probably going to be protected, but the other two forwards are up in the air.

Jamwad Hilder posted:seems pretty easy to pick to me: For one, I wouldn't protect Karlsson, or probably Tierney (only reason I'd consider it is he's 22), over Donskoi, who had had a down year and missed considerable time with an injury. I kinda feel like if it could be said to be easy, it's in part in the sense that after the first 3 or 4 forwards, it doesn't even matter, and in part because some of the people we'd want to protect are exempt anyway. But it's hard to look at the team over this past season and, beyond that first handful, see any player as being of particular importance, or an improvement over 3 or 4 others.

They're gonna lose a good player somehow unless they do something. Hockey twitter keeps agitating on selling high on Josi as his league rep seems to outweigh his actual ranking (PK subban is not a top pairing blablablabla) and thus allow them to go 7-3-1 but I can't believe Poile would have the gumption to do that. Although he did trade Seth Jones and Weber so who knows.
