Sans uses the rural term for self on the Japanese translation of Undertale and apparently that's a thing on jp gaming circles?

It was kind of a point of contention in the Japanese fandom over whether Sans is the kind of guy who would use "ore" or "boku," the two most common self-pronouns for dudes, and "oira" just took them by surprise.

I admit, this kind of thing interests me- in what context is 'oira' used? I know the Japanese language has all kinds of pronoun rules depending on gender and social status, and now it seems where you came from?

"Oira" is used mostly by country bumpkins.

I have never heard it spoken once in my lifetime, let alone by people that come from the countryside. However, I've heard it sometimes on things like historical movies or period drama and it's used by samurai mostly. So I think they're trying to make sans into Yojimbo or some kind of old-fashioned thug.

According to this, it's also used in a comedic manner. Makes sense for someone like Sans.

This is a fat guy's scooter decorated with Confederate flag riding around a Walmart of sentences.

In a more Western-centric term, it's like if Lenny or Carl in The Simpsons was given the voice of Cletus.
