I'm more worried about this creating a justification for the really crazy right wingers to start assaulting people (besides Gianforte) they disagree with even if they aren't liberals. They've been waiting for some "spark" to show how the LIEBRULS are trying to destroy America and this could be it. Not saying that's going to happen but radicals are never in the right mind.

Note: somewhat wild, early speculation about the fallout below I noticed he's recently unemployed after long being self-employed. So what are the chances this was in retaliation to some healthcare issue brought on by AHCA in his family? Because that's about the only narrative that'll fly without damaging left cred that much. To be clear, I'm not saying it's ok to murder those that vote for AHCA- but 'my wife is dying of cancer and you're taking our healthcare away!' is certainly a narrative that would soften the blow. At least compared to 'left terrorists murdering political opponents indiscriminately!'

I mean, on the one hand, a leftist firing 50 rounds into a crowd of Republican officials. That's bad, and the right will absolutely milk it for all it's worth. On the other hand, not a single fatality, which makes this kind of boring in the context of our fair country. There's no real urgency here; nobody died, the shooter is alive and in custody, and RADIKLE ISLERMIC TERARASM is almost certainly not an issue. There's gonna be a bump in the polls, but this was way too unfocused and random to have lasting effects.

Shooting politicians is just going to increase as people get increasingly cornered both economically and mentally especially if there is such a direct link between them and your potential painful death/bankruptcy. It is a sign of the increasing failure of the social contract. Putting the fear of god into Republicans is a good thing. This greatly shortens their actions to consequence path so it's no longer push button for a million dollars but random person dies.
