part of the reason labour is such a mess is that during the Blair years rather than have local working class people be candidates and MP's its all come from southern political advisers leading to someone like tristram hunt being an MP for a very working class area. He also crossed a picket line while he was an MP to give a lecture on Marx

To not understand that is to not understand the UK. The reason we have so many carpetbaggers is because the political class doesn't respect the public. This is especially pervasive in Labour in the north of England (and I say this as a Labour supporter in the north of England), where they will send any old Londoner trying to make a name for themselves up here like it's a term in an especially poo poo school during teacher training just to test their mettle. And the end result of that is that ineffectual, disinterested people get put in charge of our region, and funding here is very low because of it. London has Crossrail and all the wonderful train projects that are set to drain the rest of the country of talent 15 minutes quicker each way for only £100bil (money well spent!), NIreland has cash flung at it, Scotland does better per head than England, as does Wales (especially when EU regional funding comes in). Meanwhile public transport that doesn't point directly at London costs a fortune, and is mostly poo poo, anywhere north of Islington. e: ^^ that guy puts it much more concisely and less bitterly than me jBrereton has issued a correction as of 12:05 on Jun 14, 2017 |

An example of how poo poo northern rail services are is my trip from stoke to Bangor costed more than my hotel for the weekend. A good example of how tribal northern (anywhere North of London that isn't one of the big3counts) England is is to have a look at where notts county, Nottingham forest and derby have their stadiums and remember that people view opposing fans as subhuman.

British hyperlocal tribalism is something that is almost totally absent outside of the really old money suburbs of colonial America. As a Long Islander you can point at just about any dumb tiny meaningless place on a map and say who's better or worse than your town. It's a vestige of 18th century cultural bullshit I imagine.

I'm sure your average oklahoma small town in the middle of nowhere has gestalt opinions about the ones up and down the road plus the different native american bands in the area. Same odds. Towns in Oklahoma are way too small to develop those kind of rivalries, and Indian nations are already functionally autonomous so the separation has always been there. Oklahomans hate people from other counties, but mostly people from Texas.

Hi friend, Millwall and West Ham aren't in the same division either but the magic of the cup allows them to occasionally have a good ballyhoo. County and Forrest also have the JPT as a possible punch up aside from the league cup and fa cup.

Yeah, but I live in Nottingham, and comparing the Forest and County rivalry to something on the level of Celtic and Rangers is just flat out wrong. There was one fight recently which is the only one I can remember. The worst I ever encountered was Cardiff and Bristol City, where Cardiff fans would wait in the train station for anyone in a red shirt and jump them. poo poo was nuts.

I met a traveller from an antique land Who said: "Two vast and trunkless legs of stone Stand in the desert. Near them, on the sand, Half sunk, a shattered visage lies, whose frown, And wrinkled lip, and sneer of cold command, Tell that its sculptor well those passions read Which yet survive, stamped on these lifeless things, The hand that mocked them and the heart that fed: And on the pedestal these words appear: 'CONTROLS ON IMMIGRATION'

He's said he can't reconcile being the leader of the Liberal Democrat and his Christian values, so it's absolutely because he's a homophobe and is afraid he's pissed off Jesus with his mealy mouthed half answers on whether he thinks gay sex is a sin. I just hope he is now able to discover the truth about whether or not chemicals are turning the frogs and the fish gay.
