I appear to just have killed an Orc named Sir Grimm. I wonder what his story was. Anyway, the hunt for an Iron Lungs Duelist candidate begins.

Finally start to git gud at team building, just broke the back of an orc youth/warrior host led by a warlord without deaths and it was Quick question, how is experience formed? Do your bros get extra xp for personally ending an opposing warrior, or is it a fixed rate for winning a scenario? Because while I'm kind of a completionist( gotta leave none alive! Also, loot concerns), if it doesn't net extra XP I might not spend my time hunting down every last straggler in a direwolf/'zehrer horde.

you get xp for participating (a little) doing damage (some) and delivering killing blows (also some) it's not enough to bother running down people who are inconvenient.

I've been on the fence about buying this game for some time now. At first I was waiting for release, then a sale... it seems it's like extremely my poo poo, but I have such a huge game backlog. That being said, I literally just Googled "Battle Brothers Sale" and apparently it's on sale at Humble for 25% off - https://www.humblebundle.com/store/battle-brothers Just thought I'd share that little tidbit with everyone. I now own the game.

Can someone recap Orc Invasion objectives for me? Wiki says I have to keep attacking them, but I've torched a load of camps and slain two warlords now.

I just went around doing noble missions for a while, and it just sort of ended at an arbitrary point. There's an abstract 'war score' similar to CK2 and my guess is that the conflict ends when it goes high enough. I had the 'Defeat the greenskin invasion' ambition at the time which gave me a rough indication of the war's status 'Undecided', 'Slightly Winning', etc.

You've just gotta keep plugging away at it. Taking missions that seem more dangerous or important to the war effort (like drawing out and killing a warlord) seem to be worth more progress but there isn't a specific mission or battle that will just end the whole shebang when you complete it.

So just to be clear, taking on contracts adds more progress than just going out into the wilds and mowing down goblin/orc camps freestyle? The noble contracts are kind of annoying because they don't seem to be offered anywhere near where the action is. It's usually "go trudge halfway across the map and defend this village, then come back for monies." e: the running around is probably because I'm on my second crisis and the first one was a noble war where I helped the obviously-best house take over half the world, so they have too many cities.

But there's nothing stopping you from taking a contract, clearing out the camp you're sent to take care of, and then attacking a couple more for extra loot.

I've got the Crystal Skull event to trigger for the first time and now I'm considering a build based on it. I'd pair Direwolf Mail and the Crystal Skull (for a total of -15 Resolve to adjacent enemies) with Fearsome and one-handed hammers (that always deal at least 10 points of HP damage). Throw in goblin poison (guaranteed to trigger when applied to hammers) for a dedicated debuff/armor-stripping bro that I'd keep in the reserves most of the time and bring in to deal with (Hedge) Knights and Orc Warriors/Warlords. Could be good against Goblins, too, simply because -15 Resolve should put them pretty close to 0. e: Maybe get Overwhelm, too, because that bro might have to be a Dodge tank to some extent, considering he's going to be wearing pretty light armor. Has anyone ever tried something like that? Wizard Styles fucked around with this message at 23:05 on Jun 12, 2017 |

Also reminder to self: Turn OFF perma destruction for unlimited test run games in the future. Nothing like randomly losing your favorite town 2 weeks into an undead plague.

Any tips for completing the "defeat 24 enemies in a battle" ambition? I've had it for about half of the undead crisis now because I thought it'd be easy enough to have a battle with a bunch of ghouls or zombies, since it happened often enough in the previous version. Now it seems like there's never that many enemies in a battle.

Yeah, unless it's changed since I experienced it they do. If you attack someone near a camp, you get all encounters at once. Hell, enemy mobs sometime try to kite me into camps and each other!

I was attacked next to a bandit camp by direwolves and had to fight both. Bandits even waited for the wolves to be done before they came after me, clever gits.

Nah. What's the harm? Silly peasant villages trying to burn random women at the stake. Especially during a greenskin invasion, they should be packing their poo poo and running to the nearest fort. If the cultists want to pick a fight with the marauders, let em.

I'm disappointed. The game is a really good sandbox that would only become amazing with really solid mod capabilities.

That is incredibly stupid of them. Literally all they have to do is unobfuscate the code. The directory structure and all the relevant files are right there in the zip, but I can't do anything with them because they're all .cnut files. I get that workshop integration might be more trouble than it's worth, but that's hardly mandatory for having a modding scene...

I got my money's worth out of the game so I don't begrudge them this, but I also won't bother with more than another campaign or two. A mod scene could have easily kept me playing this for years a la mount and blade. Guess we just have to hope for a similar game or sequel at some point in the future.

xthetenth posted:Yeah, it's less a feeling of loss and more a wistful thought of what could've been. Pretty much. There is a lot of things I've really grown to like about this game and has become a regular attraction during the "lets gently caress off at work" times. I adore the armor progression. It feels really natural to go from the leathers and padded coats to chain and to the late game plates. It works really well and you can feel the impact quickly. I like the little touches of the battle bros having different backgrounds and how that plays out in the game. The combat system is solid and I could easily see where I made a tactical mistake or a good move. The end-game crises are fun though I've only dipped my toes into that area of the game but good thus far. I really like that different enemies have different tactics, making me keep a healthy inventory of weapons, shields, and spare Brothers do deal with Greenskins, Undead, or what have you. I really like that guys die regularly but not so much that it feels like it cripples me if one or two fall in battle. Its acceptable losses to move on. The game balances the meat grinder well I think. I do have complaints though. The weapon system is kind of bad. There is none of that great progression from the armor system and sometimes upgrades feel too slight (with the exception of the big meaty two-handers). The differences between the weapons are a bit lopsided and lead to clear favorites but its not terrible. Sometimes I feel like I need a long break as it can feel like just samey battle after samey battle, particularly in the early mid-game when I seem to depopulate a few generations of bandits. I got issues with some of the writing but cest la vie. I rolled my eyes at the bit where a Lord is giving a speech before a battle and your commander looks out and sees that the "cynics and sodomites" are the ones not cheering. Come on, this Sodomite is literally leading the battle. I'm being paid a lot of gold to ahh gently caress it. The shame is really what could of been. I'd loved to see some more fantasy elements come in. Even The Black Company had wizards and some other goofy stuff. There is a lot of great places to go with the end game crises or even long events. Man, I really like the core game. It really is a shame to think what could of been cause it feels like this could of really gone in great places.
