Following a revolt by the English nobility against his rule, King John puts his royal seal on the Magna Carta, or “Great Charter.” The document, essentially a peace treaty between John and his barons, guaranteed that the king would respect feudal rights and privileges, uphold the freedom of the church, and maintain the nation’s laws. Although more a reactionary than a progressive document in its day, the Magna Carta was seen as a cornerstone in the development of democratic England by later generations. jabby posted:Plus the government is hiding behind most of the victims being 'missing'. A more cynical person could conclude that helpful lie is why there's so little coordinated effort to identify the injured and inform their families. The Casualties Bureau (surely the grimmest job in the Home Office) has been stood down now - all but a few of the survivors and bodies so far recovered have now been identified and people informed, and local Plod take over from here. The reason why nobody's come up with a number is nobody really knows how to. The 150 number is (allegedly) from the local councils numbers - a fairly grim arithmetic of "We know this many people lived in that building, and we've identified this amount of people". The problem is they've absolutely no way of knowing how many people escaped without coming into contact with authorities (a small number), how many were on holiday or otherwise not in the building (probably a larger number), and how many were just never there for one reason or another (happens more than you think, kids registered to vote at home but away at college, say). Then weighing against that is the council won't know about sublets, sofa-surfers, undeclared partners, and all the other random people that might have been in the building that night. The real number could be a little lower or much, much higher, which is why nobody wants to go on record with it. The real problem is some of those flats burned for over 12 hours, at pretty high temperatures - it's entirely possible that they will *never* be able to give a definite number because some of those residents are now indiscriminate carbon sludge.

Bones don't burn very well, and house fires are relatively low temperature (at least compared to a crematorium oven). Considering the fine-tooth comb that's gonna be used to go over this place I'd be surprised if the death toll isn't spot-on or very close. I get what you're saying about it being very difficult to make an estimate at this stage, but when have you ever seen a disaster where the media haven't given an estimated death toll? Marmaduke! posted:Sadly Emily Thornberry will probably have switched off her smug mode, in light of the circumstances. Darth Walrus posted:Does that also apply when it sounds like the entire outside of the building got turned into thermite? Not really: for one, even this fire probably wouldn't be hot enough to set off thermite: you need something like 2500C , and even huge fires don't get that hot.
