On the other hand, doesn't hurt anyone if I make a save at the beginning of each mission and reload if I hit bugs or what I feel is bullshit. I won't reload for my own mistakes or simply getting outwitted.

XCOM really has always been about dealing with awful luck when it happens, and that's why I didn't like the first Firaxis game- it seemed like things would spiral to hell way, way too quickly if you lost a single mission.

I dunno if it was Beaglerush specifically but yeah iirc when the game was released the chance to hit was 1% lower than the displayed value, so 100% was in actuality 99%.

Huh? Xenonauts starts with a pre-built base just like the original X-COM. The difference is that in Xenonauts the layout isn't hot garbage.

Anyways, I started a new Xenonauts game, with a simple mod that replaces some music and soundeffects with OG X-COM's ones. I'm also doing something I've never done before: playing Ironman. And instead of the usual eastern Mediterranean, I put my HQ down in Florida so in addition to Iron Man I'm also Florida Man. Those aliens won't know what hit them. :madmax:

I dont think its luck that people tend to have a problem with. New Xcom has some weird and terrible design choices that have backwards methods to deal with then. This might be the first game where situational awareness and recon is bad. Its not luck that annoys people, its the underlying vague feel that you did the right thing and were punished for it.

That's not recon, that's charging in blindly like an idiot. Recon would be using knowledge of the enemies movements to figure out where they are. Or just throwing a battlescanner.

Just in your example, there's a lot of things you could do differently. Sure, a soldier sitting behind full cover isn't likely to be hit. But there's still a chance, and you want to minimize that as much as possible. Engage the Outsider in a manner that allows you to control how the fight unfolds. Put all your guys in position prior to activating it so you are more likely to kill it before it even gets a shot off. If it does get a chance to fire, use defensive items to improve your odds of survival. Hunker down while a soldier outside the aliens LOS sets up a flank. Or just use a grenade to blow up its cover and make it an easy kill.

How do I even check the alien's LOS?

The stealth system tries to hide it but the game operates according to weird soliphistic logic. Enemies only really exist when you see them An enemy cant see you if you dont see them. A good vantage point can awaken multiple pods and get you in a firefight you cant win. The game is easier if you limit your line of sight A blind xcom soldier would be invulnerable

That only works if the enemy's LoS is changed to match yours. They do, in fact, have a defined sight range; it simply happens to be set to be the same as XCom's. If your Sight range was reduced, but the enemy's was not, they would activate before you saw them.

That's why spotting an enemy with a concealed ranger when the rest of your squad is active doesn't activate the pod.

I have a Bleed Out mod installed because I think it's more dramatic when a soldier gets crit out from a position of full cover and is set to bleeding out rather than dead. One of those adds tactical consideration -- do I burn med-charges right now when my specialist could be shooting the baddies that shot the downed soldier, whereas when it's 0-to-100 dead, it's not very dramatic, it's just gently caress you.

We do, but a better UI for it would be nice. Sometimes it takes some weird camera angling to see the crosshair symbol, so a simple list would be nice.

Also the current one, like everything else with LOS, is buggy as an anthill sometimes.

First time encountering the DLC. Hit Shen's Last Gift as soon as it popped up.

Jeeezzzzus.

Got all the way to the roof on ironman with t1 weapons and armor with no casualties. Didn't even realize you could turn off the gas until wiping out all the turrets and several rounds of robots. Lost on the roof because the SPARK just got ground down and hit too many times.

Don't know how I feel about the mission. It was certainly more epic and cool then the last mission of the game, but it was also a loving slog. Multi hours only to lose at the last moment. Not really in the mood to go through it again right off the bat. It could really stand to be split into two missions in the expansion.

The big reason for this is because even the original X-com ufo defense realized that building your base was a terrible way to start the game and so it happily gave you one pre-built and I think it even had a tank?

The bad news was the design was literally so crappy that 90% of everyone who had played before would just sell half the buildings right off the bat and build a more defensible design; which meant they were basically doing the base building portion first.

Nah, I don't think there were any pre-built tanks. Anyway, 12-year old me never got the concept of "base defensibility" and for the longest time kept basing the design of all the bases upon the default one, even when doing so was dumb as hell.

Now I wonder if the final mission will remain the same, cause there's a common problem: by the time you are already powerful enough to get the best toys (especially if they are add-on and/or optional), not much of the regular opposition feels worthy to use them on.
