I actually think she has the charisma and relatability to make the party palatable again and I even think she might be able to best Corbyn or at least match him because she genuinely appears human. So far they don't seem to have realised this though and I hope they continue to overlook her.

So far they don't seem to have realised this though and I hope they continue to overlook her. She does well because she's up against a single-issue party and the likes of Kezia Dugdale, and she gets little media scrutiny outside of Scotland. If she actually went up against Corbyn it would quickly be obvious that she shouts loudly about principles and quietly votes for things like the rape clause. In any case, the Grenfell fire makes it virtually a moot point. There is no potential Tory leader that will prevent them being blamed hard for this.

Wait hang the gently caress on https://twitter.com/BBCNewsnight/status/875446958789468160 Y'all aren't putting sprinkler systems in new school buildings? Even in the depths of Republican hell I'm pretty sure it's a Federal regulation over here that every school needs a fire suppression system and while we don't have suppression systems like that in apartment buildings necessarily (tho aside from massive urban areas ours tend to be fewer floors overall & easier to evacuate), I know that smoke & monoxide detectors are loving mandatory in every home in the United States. How on earth did y'all get to this point? Did the ghost of Thatcher literally murder those people? edit: god drat @ above SpaceDrake fucked around with this message at 22:41 on Jun 15, 2017 |

Newsnight reports that Grenfell tower could have been totally fitted with sprinkers for £200,000. The cladding cost over £2 million. The leader of Kensington council says fitting sprinklers would have made the renovation take longer.

CoolCab posted:she's not a member of parliament though? Candidates for leadership must be elected by MPs but afaik do not strictly have to be MPs themselves. It's an internal party thing anyway, the only reason it'd be a problem is negative press about an unelected PM, which hilariously is only even in the public consciousness because the Tories themselves spread it around to discredit Brown.

I'd disagree with this actually, depending on the outcome of the investigation. If the cladding is legal, which the newspaper articles I've read suggest it is, then blame should be directed at those who made the building regs, not those who followed them. (Of course, blame about the generally lovely state of fire safety in the flat is a separate matter, and I'd support a corporate manslaughter charge there if it was a contributing factor). Edit: <--- Ooh, shiny. Thanks, Fans!
