MOST POPULAR PRIME MINISTER SINCE THATCHER.

How is she still going? When will the inertia stop?

On one hand she's awful and bad and any vaguely serious contender would absolutely thrash her in a leadership bid. On the other leading the Tory party during a decline like this, about to go knackers-first into Brexit, is one hell of a poisoned chalice.

Holy gently caress if this is true - that they put loving gas pipes through communal areas and didn't even fireproof them - then they're going to have open a new loving prison.

Other tower blocks to have had gas pipes retrofitted have had the pipes go up the outside of the building - presumably this wasn't an option here because it would have ruined the sleek pretty looks and been more expensive because they'd need to use copper rather than PVC, so we're just going to run flammable gas lines through the only means of escape from a fire

And this is S-tier cuntery. It's amazing that this was allowed to happen. Jesus.

I seem to recall an early report from someone in the Fire Service saying they were slightly delayed going into the tower block because of a gas leak and they had to wait for the mains to be turned off. It was probably on the Guardian live blog during the first few hours and I'm on my iPad so limited search functionality to dig it up.

You can almost see the preceding The Thick of It scene.

The minister and Ollie are arguing about whether it would be a good idea to meet actual residents after Malcolm Tucker told them to only speak to firemen the first time.

Ollie says it would send a good message about how much the minister cares about his constituents and that he should really do it soon since the opposition and even Brenda already got around to it.

Just as the minister is about to agree, Malcolm Tucker bursts in to tell the Minister to not loving do it because he is an out of touch idiot who will lose an argument against illiterate council tenants on live TV.

Terry pops in with a stack of forms and asks why they couldn't just send the minister to visit the hospital since the injured probably wouldn't manage to argue.

The minister thinks that actually this is a very good idea, which will show that he does indeed care about those who suffered worst, and grabs Ollie to come with him. Malcolm Tucker follows them and keeps pointing out the minister is so utterly out of touch with the general population he would still lose an argument against a literal vegetable, and degenerates into incoherent swearing as the minister tries to ignore him.

She's already at 29% approval. I'm not sure how much further down it can go.

One thing worth remembering about May is that one of the chief reasons for her early approval ratings was because she was considered a safe, competent pair of hands after the flighty, unprofessional Cameron. She had this reputation largely because of her long stint as Home Secretary, which she had emerged from looking like a steady, quietly capable leader.

Think about that for a second. Yvette Cooper, her opponent for most of her tenure, was unable to make Theresa 'literally ran corporate rape camps on U.K. soil' May look bad. There's no greater argument for keeping her branch of the Labour Party out of power.

London fire: A tale of two tower blocks posted:

London is increasingly becoming a city of high-rise living. There are more than 700 tower blocks, ranging from brand new luxury developments to the post-war council-owned buildings seen as a quick-fix to cure problems caused by crumbling and unsanitary 19th Century hovels.

About 8% of Londoners now live in tower blocks. Some flats are bought for millions, others are relatively low-cost social housing rented from a local council at a fraction of the private rate.
Grenfell Tower itself was designed in 1967, started in 1972 and finished in 1974.
Originally built as municipal housing as part of the slum clearances of the 1960s, it had 120 one and two-bedroom flats over 20 of its 24 storeys, and was renovated in 2016.
It's in a neighbourhood ranked among the most deprived 10% in England.

Just two miles away - or four stops along the Circle/Hammersmith and City line - is 3 Merchant Square, a 21-storey tower that is part of a new development around Paddington Basin. The contemporary block was finished in 2016 and holds 60 apartments over 15 storeys.
It's a different world. The penthouse apartment was sold for £7.5m. One-bedroom flats are at least £1m.

Surrounded by restaurants and bars, workers and residents can lounge on deckchairs on a newly-built floating park. Lunchtime yoga sessions are held and there's a luxury fitness club.
There's an enormous fountain and a bridge created by renowned designer Thomas Heatherwick, a nursery and winter garden.
But nice though these peripheries undoubtedly are, they don't keep people safe from fire. For that, we must have a look at the specifications of the apartments in the tower.

Once you get past the sales brochure description of 3 Merchant Square's walnut cutlery drawer inserts and integral wine coolers, the adjustable mood lighting and heated bathroom walls, you come to the fire safety details: Every flat has not only ceiling mounted smoke detectors but sprinklers.
The International Fire Sprinkler Association (IFSA) says that automatic fire sprinkler systems are the single most effective fire protection measure available, and are able to make up for a wide range of other fire protection deficiencies.

There has never been a multiple loss of life from a fire developing in a building protected by a properly designed, installed and maintained fire sprinkler system. While fire sprinkler systems have been required in new high-rise residential buildings in England since 2007, it is not compulsory to retrofit them into existing buildings. So Grenfell Tower had none.
Even the beeb is running "look at these bourgie fucks" articles now.

End years of Major were mostly incompetence and sexual impropriety, this time round it seems like all their chickens are coming home to roost at once and people are seeing them for what they really are.

Also I'm willing to bet any Tory vaguely likely to be near the leadership election will have a quote something like Boris' "Get stuffed" or Rees-Mogg's "Indian safety regulations are good enough for Britain" lurking in their backgrounds so even if they hadn't already decided to do so they'll be winding their necks the gently caress in for a good couple of weeks. Ironically this could have ended up saving May's leadership at least until conference season.

Yeah even the staunchest republicans (and I speak as one) tend to have at least a little respect for the Queen personally. I don't think her job should exist but she seems to do it well. I doubt she's in much danger of taking a brick to the head from a group of grieving victims.

I was talking to a die hard Tory old man yesterday and the fire has flipped the switch to Labour. He's not alone amongst his friends in real life and Facebook/various newspaper comments sections. He says anyone who has ever had to work in a high rise, live in one, or be involved in anything to do with health and saftey including mandatory courses and whatnot, are absolutely fuming and putting the blame right on the Tory party. It's an evil even the pensioners can see.

The mental gymnastics are amazing to behold. Aparrantly it's the other Torys down in central London/government who are to blame as none of them can see past the city and looking after their own. Here's the key, ourTory MP is alright but he's a backbencher so what can he do? They are going to vote Labour next election simply to keep May and her friends out.

Honestly May's team is right to keep her away from the public on security grounds.

Not morally right, every tory needs to be thrown to the loving wolves at this point, but it's basically a necessary decision if they want to keep her from getting verbally eviscerated or physically slapped.
