I'm not so sure. Will have to see how it plays out. Helps that even the Torygraph admits that Berlin bans that shite so it can't be EU-related.

Nah, in the States the levels of government (local, state, federal, tribal, territories), their agencies, and select nonprofits are legally mandated to plan this poo poo out ahead of time. Its all apart of the National Incident Management System. The NIMS is actually one of the few accomplishments of the George W. Bush administration.

There are problems with our system. Each major disaster reveals areas of weakness that need to be strengthened. And not everyone's doing the necessary planning and preparation work. But it's still light years ahead of the UK's "the council will figure it out" approach.

London Mayor Sadiq Khan has written to the prime minister urging her to do more to help provide information to the families of the victims.

In his letter Khan said identify those killed could be speeded up if the authorities abandoned protocols used after a terrorist attack. He wrote:

The local community feels their grief has been made worse by the lack of information about their missing family members and friends. They are fully aware of the true scale of this tragedy but cannot comprehend why they are not being given more information. There is also insufficient support for victims on the ground.

I appreciate that the authorities want to be absolutely certain that any information is correct before it is issued publicly, and the fire brigade, police and coroner are doing a heroic job obtaining this information in extremely difficult circumstances. While the current systems in place may work well for a terrorist attack, there are legitimate questions about whether they are still appropriate in situations where obtaining this information could take much longer.

Notably they are using terrorist-attack protocols, which is slowing the system down.

I never really understood the "stay in your flat" advice for high rise buildings. Of course, it's better than going out into the corridor and falling unconscious from smoke inhalation, but even on the 4th story of my block, if the whole corridor outside is on fire then sure the fire brigade might arrive within a few minutes but they're not going to be standing outside my door in an extinguished corridor within the time that my 30-minute rated front door keeps the fire outside my flat.

Would rather jump and break my legs, at least from the 4th story. Anyone higher up would be screwed.

if there is fire in one or two flats, it's easier for emergency services to move around, they are supposed to be able to contain the fire within the hour. Assuming it doesn't spread to all other flats through the outside of the building and the heat gets so bad that they can't go up. I suppose as well that some have been told that over the phone so that they would not despair until death arrives. Read about the guy who was on the phone on his wife, the fireman took the phone told her they were going to get her, then told the husband to say farewell.

You've got a stupid habit of sweeping into the thread and just flat out telling people they're wrong about this or that in a very declarative way that suggests you know what you're talking about.
But I've seen (and I think all of us regulars have seen) a few times in the last few months where people have pulled you up and pointed out that quite often you don't know wtf you're talking about.

So how about in future, when you think somebody is wrong about something, you say why and provide something that backs up your statements, because it looks like you're trying to ride along on an aura of expertise that has been shot full of holes a few times in the last year or so.

And just so we're clear, I'm not saying you're wrong now, but your record is unreliable enough fr me to bring it up.

I want to note that the flame resistant panels would have burned as well, just with delay and/or slower. There's a lot being said about these panels in the thread and the news right now, but we don't know how important they were for spreading the fire and how much of a difference more flame resistant material would make. I agree that the American and German building codes banning the stuff under certain conditions is pretty suspect, but it's circumstantial proof.

We should wait with putting blame until the first forensic reports are in.

edit2: lost of harrowing stories tbh, between the woman throwing her kid (not the baby which got caught, they did find 6 bodies outside of the building) out of the window, the one on facebook opening the door to let people in, the one on the phone who said she could not stand on the floor because it was so hot, others calling out from windows hoping to be rescued. It was loving hell to watch from afar after the fact, I do not know how the people who had to witness it first hand are going to cope with it

He's right. DSMA notices aren't like injunctions that are issued for individual incidents or information. They're a set of standing voluntary guidelines for the media which outline the circumstances in which classified information should not be relayed to the public. When necessary, the DSMA committee may contact editors to alert them that certain information falls under the existing notices.

I really can't see how it would be justified for the death toll to fall under the existing notices and am sceptical that editors would choose to comply if they were asked not to publish it on that basis.
