Rakosi posted:I never really understood the "stay in your flat" advice for high rise buildings. Of course, it's better than going out into the corridor and falling unconscious from smoke inhalation, but even on the 4th story of my block, if the whole corridor outside is on fire then sure the fire brigade might arrive within a few minutes but they're not going to be standing outside my door in an extinguished corridor within the time that my 30-minute rated front door keeps the fire outside my flat. if there is fire in one or two flats, it's easier for emergency services to move around, they are supposed to be able to contain the fire within the hour. Assuming it doesn't spread to all other flats through the outside of the building and the heat gets so bad that they can't go up. I suppose as well that some have been told that over the phone so that they would not despair until death arrives. Read about the guy who was on the phone on his wife, the fireman took the phone told her they were going to get her, then told the husband to say farewell. edit: was his sister not his wife but link a few posts below a pipe smoking dog posted:I don't think the response time is an issue, the problem is that the fire fighters had to work for 14 hours straight because there was no one else to replace them. You've got a stupid habit of sweeping into the thread and just flat out telling people they're wrong about this or that in a very declarative way that suggests you know what you're talking about. But I've seen (and I think all of us regulars have seen) a few times in the last few months where people have pulled you up and pointed out that quite often you don't know wtf you're talking about. So how about in future, when you think somebody is wrong about something, you say why and provide something that backs up your statements, because it looks like you're trying to ride along on an aura of expertise that has been shot full of holes a few times in the last year or so. And just so we're clear, I'm not saying you're wrong now, but your record is unreliable enough fr me to bring it up.

There's a lot being said about these panels in the thread and the news right now, but we don't know how important they were for spreading the fire and how much of a difference more flame resistant material would make. I agree that the American and German building codes banning the stuff under certain conditions is pretty suspect, but it's circumstantial proof. We should wait with putting blame until the first forensic reports are in.

communism bitch posted:I've been meaning to call you out for a while, and I guess now is as good a time as any. He's right. DSMA notices aren't like injunctions that are issued for individual incidents or information. They're a set of standing voluntary guidelines for the media which outline the circumstances in which classified information should not be relayed to the public. When necessary, the DSMA committee may contact editors to alert them that certain information falls under the existing notices. I really can't see how it would be justified for the death toll to fall under the existing notices and am sceptical that editors would choose to comply if they were asked not to publish it on that basis.
