I'm imagining her in a conference room at the far end of the long table, the are walls flanked with rows of blank faced security and all the other chairs are down the opposite end.

A single glass of water sits in front of May. None for the visitors.

Most of the meeting will consist of her staring at them, sipping her water in silence as a grandfather clock loudly ticks and tocks.

It's like, how do you miss the point so badly?

Assuming you don't think he just did it for the publicity, Corbyn went to the scene because he wanted to get a sense of what things were like on the ground, feel the mood, see the relief effort etc. The fact that he spoke to residents and tried to comfort them while he was there is because he's a human being and those people wanted to talk to him, not because he thinks meeting him will somehow make people feel better.

May summoning people to meet her has absolutely none of that. It doesn't provide her with any information or a sense of what things are like in the area. It doesn't provide any comfort for people. It's transparently just being done so the papers can say she met the victims, and it's mind-boggling that she doesn't see how it comes off.

PLEASE ASK ABOUT MY 80,000 WORD WALLACE AND GROMIT SLASH FICTION. PLEASE.

Maybe they've laid down some plastic sheeting and left her sedated in the middle of the floor and the Grenfell residents are being allowed to come round and quietly get rid of her for the conservative party.

I'd be torn between not wanting to speak to her and having the chance to tell her to gently caress herself in person.

There's no way she can go out there now and meet people in their local community.

A) She's patently bad at it hence avoiding it forever
B) She tried being there and it failed miserably
C) She has pissed so many people off she will just get yelled at and possibly bottled, and she clearly can't deal with the unexpected

Like, I get that the Queen went down but no-one is pissed off at the Queen or blaming her for the fire happening - they do blame Theresa May and/or the Tories. So yeah, she's a total robot coward but nothing she does now will make things any better, she's screwed.

DD: Fondly regard abomination.

Given that she can't go to Grenfell without being bottled, I think her best move at the moment would be a giant we-hosed-up speech on TV, followed by a public meeting with a small number of carefully selected telegenic victims. Then hope and pray that de-escalates things enough that she can go down in person and start defusing the protests before they turn into riots.

She's not doing any of that, because she's still under the impression that things can't possibly get any worse.

Also, DS, I'm pretty sure jabby was saying that May badly missed the point, not you.

It even ends with three paragraphs explaining how it's primarily a member state matter.

Weirdly they actually missed a trick on this one - they blamed environmental targets (see https://www.carbonbrief.org/factcheck-grenfell-tower-fire-and-the-daily-mails-green-targets-claim for a non-Mail discussion), which are indirectly derived from EU targets. I'm guessing that's from ignorance rather than deliberate design.

Also, lol at the Express - "you know the problem here, is NOT ENOUGH EU REGULATIONS, bloody eurocrats need to pull their fingers out and get back to interfering with our sovereignty like they're supposed to!"

There is an argument that the combination of EU environmental targets and bans on certain halogen containing fire retardants promoted use of less safe materials in some areas, but we've largely got around that now with better fire retardants, and the existence of fire resistant cladding shoots down the idea that it has anything to do with Grenfell.

Yeah, she can't escape that now.

So there's this idea she's just being propped up so all the poo poo can stick to her and someone else can roll in when it's election time. Does the fire help or hinder that? Rationally it should prevent a leadership challenge from Boris but he's shrugged off plenty before. Or will this force her to go too soon and force someone else to possibly eat poo poo over Brexit?
