Hello, friends. I've finally picked up Dragon Quest 8 and I've been playing it all week. I got to the Mole Hole near Ascantha today. I've been following some limited tips, but I'm always searching for more. It's the 3DS version, by the way. I haven't messed around with Morrie at all yet. Should I be doing that? Any other things I could be easily missing?

Morrie is recruited by beating Rank S at the Monster Arena, which is plot-gated in addition to requiring you to beat all the preceding ranks. He's optional, but nothing is missable.

Finally unlocked the Casino. Probably gonna spend time here for a while, the survivability of the party can be low on occasion. The boss right before this was heck, but the second try went much better on account of less critical hits one-shotting Jessica and Angelo.

Also was not able to kill any of the Metal King Slimes in the Dragon Labyrinth. Hatchet Man and Thunder Thrust weren't connecting at all. Don't know how I could approach it better though. That EXP would be nice right about now, I think I'm a bit under par with my low 30s high 20s team at this point.

What really helps is using the casino to make a ton of money and using reds coin toss skill to do 500 damage to everything

That's the best way to do it. Note that the upgraded versions of those skills go from 25% crit 50% miss 25% normal hit to 50% crit 50% miss so they are worth getting earlier rather than later in the grind.

By that do you mean putting it all on 1-9 and then putting it all on the spots between them? Or do you mean putting it on all the rows and columns, evens, odds, etc?

Man you gotta love these Heroes games for style. Contrast to most DW cash-in titles, even the good ones, and this one has all that polish you don't usually get.

It's weird that Yuji Hori is directing these spin-off games. Is there any Dragon Quest thing that he hasn't directed?

But also it's got some loving incredible puns, one of which took like ten hours to pay off and I had totally forgotten that it was set up way earlier and then whammo.

I remember all my party members having distinct and varied personalities, but that's because I played that game multiplayer through the entire storyline and beyond.

I did all on 1-9, spots between, and columns below. it's uh, 5x5 and then 1x5 and then 1. You can get it down to a few buttons once you have enough money to mash X - it's the four spots on the corners of 5 and then the two spots two below those two and the one below that.

Whips are probably her least interesting choice, actually. TDL got nerfed in the 3DS version, and both her knives and fans have amazing moves.

Knives are the best long-term because you get Blade Cascade, which can do either seven hits of 2 each on metals with a Liquid Metal Sword or just beat the gently caress out of single-target bosses after you Psyche Up. Fans give you some pretty sweet utility. Stealing is better than having to lean on Yangus if you're going to poopsock.

I really dig these games so far. I've never played any of them so I decided to get the remakes of 1 and 2 on Android. They're really charming games and somehow the grinding isn't as off-putting as I thought it would be. I'm sure the old versions are worse but still. After awhile the hero is a wrecking machine and finishes fights quickly with some magic help.

I'm just now starting 3 and I wanna say it's hilarious that the hero's mom is totally cool with allowing "your little friends teehee!" to spend the night when one of them is a priest that's able to blink living creatures out of existence.

Shame than Nintendo Power spoiled it, and the Erdrick reveal, though I imagine people who weren't little kids at the time might've figured it out beforehand back in one of the earlier issues that first mentioned the game. :argh:

I think Dragon Quest 3 is also the beginning of the Ah-ha, you thought that was the Big Bad but there's actually a puppet master behind them trope as well. It might've existed in another game first but I can't think of any.

Backtracking? How so? Like the first few hours until you start world hopping, and some of the bigger worlds after a while, but IIRC right now you're still at the point where you just go to a place in any given island once.

It seems every island is gated behind me not only clearing out an entire island in the past, but then also returning to every area of that same island in the present. Also feels like I've spent a fair amount of time going someplace it's fairly obvious the game wants me to go, only to discover that I only talked to some important NPC twice instead of the required three times.

I think I've cleared about five islands now, the last one I did was the automaton lair. I think there were three instances just on that island where I went to the next place too early or forgot to talk to literally everyone in some castle room.

I thought that was alluded to during the game and wasn't actually a reveal? It's been awhile since I played DQ2 but I was certain that you knew what was coming, just not the "no breaks allowed" part.

Though with how unfair DQ2 was overall, was not giving you a break really that surprising after what you've already gone through? :v:

I wouldn't really consider the part where you revisit an island in the present to see what happened backtracking, because you get to see how your actions shaped the future and the erroneous legends left in your wake. At least with the "talk to the right dude" thing you can use party chat or the in game summary thing to see if you hit the next trigger.

DQ7 might not be your cup of tea, or you just might not be in the mood for it. It's tied with 5 for my favorite for being like sixty hours of (85%) cool little vignettes that can tie back to the plot in unexpected ways, but I'm not gonna pretend that the game with a town called Notagin is perfect. At least try until the next island which IIRC ties back to a few earlier ones.

The Ninth Layer

I'll probably stick with it, I don't hate the game. It just feels 10x slower compared to Dragon Quest 5 which felt like it had a ton of momentum and where even when I was visiting an old area it was usually to do something new.

So far visiting the present islands have almost universally been "everything worked out for us some years ago and we have no idea who you are" and most of my time is spent re-clearing the dungeon I just beat for the puzzle piece to go to the next area. If that changes up ahead then great.

It's a much, much longer game than V and has a very different narrative structure, which is part of it. I enjoyed my time with VII but I would rather replay IV and V 2 or 3 more times than revisit 7, it's a very measured and particular experience.

Beat Dragon Quest 8.

This game was incredible. I had a lot of fun with it. The interconnected nature of the story was tight, and the battling was lots of fun. I can see myself going back to this one and challenging myself with different kinds of runs.

Postgame comments: I haven't attempted to fight the Dragovian Lord yet. Superbosses in Dragon Quest games tend to never be worth the time and effort, so I was wondering what typical strategies are for this guy and if I'm anywhere close to being ready.
For the Hero, I mastered Spears, I got up to Super Throw with Boomerangs, and I'm working on Courage right now; I think I have nearly 70 points or so.
Yangus has mastered both Axes and Scythes, with a dab in Humanity for fun. Don't think I'll use him, though.
Angelo's mastered Bows and Chivalry, and I've been putting a bit into Staves for additional spells; I'm sure Oomph would be good, but I didn't get to it yet.
Jessica mastered Staves and Sex Appeal and I'm working on Whips though I don't think I'll ever really use it.
Red's got Blade Cascade, and I've split the rest between Fans and Thievery, not really knowing what's good. Same with Morrie; his Passion and Claws are both close to 100, but I don't know which to do first. He's also got a bit into Clubs just to get the Hatchet Man-alike for Metal Slimes, but I don't think I'll invest more there.

If I have the makings of something good in here, let me know. If it's going to take me hours upon hours of grinding to be ready, then tell me that too, and I'll decide whether to bother or to just shelve this game and call it good for now.

Just one more thing!
I was thinking about this series last night and something most other RPGs don't do that DQ has done many times is when you beat the final boss, you can go explore the world you just saved and see people who are grateful that the danger is gone. I always liked that. I know the NPC dialogue in the older games has little depth compared to standards of many games today, yet I can't help but find the idea of running a victory lap around the world to be a great way to hit home that you beat the game.

They do kind of change some things up with the formula, without going into spoilers one town openly regards you as their time traveling saviors and another just kinda unabashedly whitewashes their history to turn you into the bad guys when they hosed up. But yeah, it's a slow burn that at least impressed me with how the world eventually ends up feeling connected in ways I never expected from something that felt really easy to just take the lazy way out and have each island exist 100% in their own little bubble.

The Dragon Quest victory lap is an insanely good tradition that make the endings feel like a proper epilogue.

Definitely beat the optional boss at least once since it gives you more game story. It's not that tough of a fight. Red using blade cascade at high tension should be all you really need. Just have Morrie buff her tension while the other chars are on heal / revive duty.

After that you have the option of re-fighting the boss over and over again, each time making it harder to beat. That is completely optional and you're not missing anything by skipping it.

Is there any good way to tell what enemies are weak to what spell in DQ8? Without the game telling me I'm doing extra damage, I'm real bad at noticing this stuff, as it turns out!

There are no weaknesses, only resistances. Spells have a particular damage range and if you're doing significantly less, then you shouldn't do it. But no, there's no way to tell besides looking it up or learning through experience.
