Also needs some F7U Gutless Cutlass.

Oh man, that thing is exactly what I'm looking for and I doubt I'd ever have found it myself, thanks!

Cutlass also definitely merits inclusion--even outside the, uh, performance issues, I've poked around one in person before; that front gear is... prodigious.

Also gonna inline-post one of my favorite less-known finds, the Joy JX:

JX 1935 = 2pOhwM; two 40hp Salmson AD-9; ff: 4/23/38 (p: Sidney Monastes). Fishlike, wingless creation referred to as a "flying flapjack," with underslung motors, didn't make it past the barbed-wire fence at the end of the airport. Monastes was unhurt, but that couldn't be said for his flapjack. POP: although this had c/n 5, registration concurrency with model J suggests there was only 1 built [12787].

So somewhat related to discussion a few pages ago, but I've been building up as large a collection as possible of ugly, oddly-designed, ill-advised and otherwise generally vaguely suspect airplane designs and I think it might be of interest here. The criteria are flexible and subjective but the intention is to be as representative as possible of aircraft of all types and eras that are either ugly (oddly proportioned, bedecked with radar blisters, boxy, etc.), strange (unconventional configuration or propulsion setup, niche specialization), or an interesting failure; or preferably some combination of all of those. Here's an imgur album of all the pictures below for easier scrolling, although they're out of order and unlabeled :effort:

Also kind of moved away from paraboloids later, and they still looked fricking cool. A shame they weren't actually built.

Modern heavy fighters are drat near the size of WWII heavy bombers -- the two-seat bomber version of the F-15 is ten feet shorter than a B-17, and carries 3x the weight of ordnance. I can't find a photo of a Mudhen and a Fort, but here are the state of the art in fighter-bombers circa 1943 and 1993:

Edit: and WWI fighterw are to the P-51 as the P-51 is to jets. Can't find a pic of a WWI fighter in the same frame as a jet because a Sopwith Camel maxes out at around the stall speed of a drat Spitfire/Mustang.

Something else that might surprise some of you - the Corsair is basically the same size at the P-47; slightly longer wingspan, slightly shorter and similar weight.
