Social housing is a terrible idea. Every once in a while some bright young feller will proclaim getting rid of rent controls will solve Sweden's housing problems and they never have even one example of where that idea has worked out

general charity chat: if you're making a fair buck, think about pledging a fixed fraction of your income to charity. 10% is the usual recommendation, but if you're filthy rich it should be more while if you're just scraping by it should be less be the socialism you want to see in the world

Julio Cruz posted:This is only true if you rarely eat out and never drink. Like somone else said, that's a myth these days. Alcohol prices have increased everywhere, a lot of pubs are chain pubs now so the food is the same price there as well, and posh restaurants still charge too much matter no matter if you are in London or Sheffield. Entertainment like theatre or cinema is the same price in London as anywhere else and you get more opportunities to grab cheap seats because there are more theatres. I love London, would move back there in a heartbeat, but alas I also like being able to live in a three bedroom house. Can I just add a "gently caress the train companies" in order to save money they cancelled the last late train that runs from London to Edinburgh, so the new last train goes before the theatres are finished. It's a big "hey northerners, want to see the latest and greatest west end play and then head on home? Well fuuuuuck you"

That kinda really only applies to 'Murica, because of their low general level of skill and lack of helmet laws. Motorbike fatalities in the UK tend to be of the kind that leaves your organs suitable only for pies. (am a motorcyclist, registered organ and marrow donor, and give blood) Actually yeah if it's at all feasible you should all be blood donors too. An hour out of your day 3 or 4 times a year, and you get choccy biscuits. They even text you letting you know when and where your donation gets used, which is a genuinely amazing feeling.

Murderion posted:One of the times I was out of work, I found one of those on the DWP's own jobsearch website. Or rather, about fifty ads, all for the same job, written in such a way as to show up on pretty much any keyword search (ie, looking for people with experience in customer service, retail, cleaning, bar work, security, you name it). I fired off an application (because hey, counts as an action for the weekly jobseeker's report), and got a reply by phone suspiciously quickly, from the head honcho herself. I agreed, because hey, an interview would probably get the advisor off my back for the week and it got me out of the house. Plus, there was a chance it could have been legit (no there wasn't). It was a weird as gently caress company, everyone I met elusively referred to me as 'buddy' and had an almost pathological hatred for British Telecom. they had me fill out a questionnaire that was full of loaded questions that were very obviously meant to lead me to the conclusion that face to face doorstop selling is cool and good and being paid exclusively on commission just really makes a lot of sense.
