Can I just add a "gently caress the train companies" in order to save money they cancelled the last late train that runs from London to Edinburgh, so the new last train goes before the theatres are finished. It's a big "hey northerners, want to see the latest and greatest west end play and then head on home? Well fuuuuuck you"

I mean, if you're going all the way to Edinburgh you can get the sleeper which leaves just before midnight, but yeah, since you said the north I guess that's no use unless you stay in Carlisle. Though it doesn't run on Saturday nights which is also kind of total balls.

But generally I agree, gently caress TOCs

they have 20 working days to respond and can refuse if the information is sensitive. last time I filed a request the company took all 20 of its 20 working days and then sent me a ream of info that didn't include what I wanted , then i asked them to review the request, they dragged that out and eventually I gave up because I got what I needed through other channels. They have ways of delaying or totally avoiding the FOI requests for quite a long while anyway is my point

I mean, eating out is relatively expensive everywhere and not something you'd do on a tight budget. Obviously it's much worse in London, but it's not something I can afford to do very often in Inverness either.

Whoa hey fellow north of Scotland goon. Inverness is such an amazing place to live (if you like your town small and touristy.) I'm Nairn born and bred, but recently had to move down near London for reasons of job.

Speaking of food I've managed to cut my weekly food shop down to about £15-20 by surviving on veg soup that I make a big pan of. Last week I treated myself to some shiitake mushrooms that were reduced for mystery reasons. If I get bored of that I might get something special for sunday dinner instead of going out.

Probably wouldn't work anyway. If the bones and teeth have been exposed to sufficient heat for sufficient time all the DNA will be destroyed.

Considering at least some of the people in the block won't have dental records on file, they are probably right that they'll never be able to identify everyone.

In the past, I've got the overnight megabus to Edinburgh when doing West End shows. But the last several times I've done a theatre trip to London, I've got the first flight on a Sunday morning from Gatwick up, and spent the night in the airport. Found a couple of sneaky places to charge my phone for free too, so I spent my night chatting poo poo online with some pals across the Atlantic. Flying ended up being pretty much as cheap (though adding on the train increased it a bit), and no stress about getting the first taxi on Shaftesbury Avenue after the show and having to run through the coach station or be stranded.
Haven't been to the West End in 11 months :( If anyone fancies getting me tickets for my birthday next month, I'll think of you while bawling my eyes out at Les Mis for the 25th time.

Yes, it's the freedom of information act. Assuming you're asking about the tower fire, however, it won't get anything on the ongoing police/fire investigations, and requesting info on who lives in the tower might run into Data Protection Act concerns if you're trying to get specific info, and the same privacy problems apply to asking about who's applied for aid/been put up temporarily.

Freedom of Information requests tend to provide the applicant with a massive amount of useless paper. It's "useful" for people asking a company for all of their information, as it gets around data protection concerns, but you'd still likely need a professional to pore through it all.

Getting out of London on a Saturday night is impossible unless you take a coach. The last train to Birmingham leaves at 9.45 and the last to Manchester at 9 dead.

In other words he probably cost Labour the seat, and saved the Tory home secretary.

There is a Freedom of Information Act, but guess what isn't covered by it?

(it's 'reasons we refused your FoI request')

e: just realised this is a bit misleading. Technically, a refusal can be taken to the Ombudsman, but that's literally one guy and, uh, speaking from experience his backlog is several years long so you can functionally ignore an FoI request unless you fear political/media consequences.

All the numbers floating around are really vague. The only quote the BBC has for the number of people living in the building is "400-600" (no loving way the council doesn't have a much more accurate number than that" and Kensington and Chelsea LBC says it's relocated "109 households" in hotels (which could be anywhere between 200 and 400 people). It's pretty clear that they don't want people doing their own maths of "x residents - y survivors = z victims".
What is it that you think councils do? Cos really they don't keep constant track of every house or flat in their borough. Now if an extensive national ID database had ever happened it'd be a different matter

It's not mentioned in the story but he didn't follow the selection procedures and then offered to stand for Labour in the seat only to have it pointed out that he hadn't followed the procedure (I think the candidate had even been selected by this point). He was so annoyed they wouldn't change the rules just for him that he ran himself, because he was the only one who could beat Amber Rudd.
