Other legendary 3rd round picks of the Pittsburgh Penguins include Mike Robertson, Alex Schoenborn, Dylan Sadowy, Max Gaede, and Harrison Ruopp.

Also Robert Bortuzzo, Bryan Rust, and Kris Letang

The Pens are extraordinarily bad with 2nd round picks though. The last second rounder they drafted that turned into a good NHLer was Alex Goligoski in 2004, and before that you have to go back to 1994 with Richard Park to even get a halfway decent NHLer.

Yeah probably, I'm gonna guess the Penguins didn't feel strongly enough about him to give him more money considering how fast they were about replacing him.

Speaking of bad drafts I was looking at the year Calgary drafted Theo Fleury and it's a drat good thing Cliff Fletcher won that fight to draft him because the only othe r player they drafted that played any real amount of games in the NHL was Stephane Matteau, who they traded to Chicago for Trent Yawney after 82 games.

Conversely, Montreal had 3 picks in the first 2 rounds and got Cassels, Leclair, and Desjardins.

Eh it's a little disingenuous to put it that way. If they wanted to protect Nate Schmidt they would have had to expose Johansson or Burakovsky (on top of Wilson and Eller). So it's not really a matter of Wilson vs. Schmidt.

That being said it's criminal the way Schmidt was utilized in Washington. I seriously can't believe he was a healthy scratch for the first few games of the postseason when he was probably their third best D behind Niskanen and Orlov.

I still would have entertained trading Carlson for a forward and protecting Schmidt. It's gonna suck when Carlson walks as a UFA next year because screw paying him what he's going to get on the open market. He should have a lot of trade value now but it looks like they are okay with not doing much this offseason.

It's kind of irrelevant anyway. Grubeaur is the obvious pick unless there's a trade to protect him.

That seems likely but since they're apparently dead set on Maf I wonder if that's what they'll do.

It depends on the market for goalies but generally I agree with you. Schmidt is very good in the defensive and neutral zones and is a great skater but he lacks quality in the offensive zone, has a poor shot, and isn't really a good option on the PP. Hard to make a case he's close to a #1 but he's certainly a solid second pairing dude. Really depends on what Vegas is interested in.

From the Capitals perspective it would be a huge loss because that makes Orpik a second pairing defenseman which is uh not ideal. I hope they take Grubauer.

Grubauer would be a good pick for Vegas but I think they go MAF and then maybe someone like Subban from Boston.

Grubeaur is significantly better than Subban in that he is an actual NHl goaltender.

I'll be interested in whether the Penguins look for a cheap veteran backup for Murray for next year. In theory Jarry is perfectly ready to assume the backup role, but in practice Murray is going to get hurt at some point and when that happens the Penguins probably would like to be in a better position than Jarry being backed up by random waiver wire fodder

Grubauer or Ullmark are the two non-MAF goaltenders Vegas is most-likely to pick. Unless there are trades to prevent both of them from getting picked, I'd be very surprised to see someone other than them selected

From what I can tell, the Pens value keeping their goaltender in the AHL and having them play 50+ games over being in the NHL and playing < 20. So I think we'll pick up a backup for 1-2 million and let Jarry continue to play until an opportunity presents itself. Then it's very likely (if Murray gets injured), that Jarry comes up and the backup continues to be the backup.

Vegas would like everyone to officially know what everyone unofficially knew. That is all, officially.

Edit: This also seems to send the message that Vegas doesn't think they can be competitive off the bat. They'd rather get a flood of draft picks and build for a few years out. That's not really shocking or anything, but I was hoping they would come out of the gate flying.

I hate the way the conferences/divisions (and really, playoffs) are. Especially now, check this out:

quote:

Eastern Conference

Atlantic and Metropolitan Divisions - 8 Teams
Within Conference (Division): 28 games
* 7 Teams: 2 Home / 2 Away
* 7 x 4 = 28 games

Within Conference (Non-Division): 24 games
* 4 Teams: 2 Home / 1 Away
* 4 Teams: 1 Home / 2 Away
* 4 x 3 = 12 games
* 4 x 3 = 12 games

Non-Conference: 30 games
* 15 Home / 15 Away
* 2 x 15 = 30

Western Conference

Central Division - 7 Teams
Within Conference (Division): 26 games
* 4 Teams: 2 Home / 2 Away
* 1 Team: 3 Home / 2 Away
* 1 Team: 2 Home / 3 Away
* 4 x 4 = 16
* 1 x 5 = 5
* 1 x 5 = 5

Non-Conference: 32 games
