You're limited to 4 of the 23 jobs in the game, which limits your combat options greatly and forces you to play more cleverly. An evil samurai twitter account picks what jobs they are. There are several variant rulesets you can use but the limit of 4 jobs remains.

to add to this, ff5 is so well balanced that practically any combination can finish the game

I would argue that it's perfectly unbalanced and that's why it's possible. :P

Well good news! You can still participate once it's begun, without preregistration! The gimmick is that you play through FFV and each time you reach one of the crystals, you tweet to Gilgabot, who will assign you a job. You will end up with four jobs, and those are the only ones you can use for the whole game. Limitations breed creativity, and it's a lot of fun trying to figure out how your different jobs' skills can carry over and how they affect your strategies throughout the game.

#fifthjob

this sounds like it owns actually. I only ever played through ff5 once (GBA version) like four years ago and had a lot of fun.

Is there a thread?

There is! And there's also a website. And various other resources.

The twitter account running registration is likely getting hammered right now, so I suggest registering and updating via the website for now.

Yeah people trash talked each other back then but no one was really mad about it. Now you have people screaming in apoplectic rage over the mic and team games are about managing everyone's fragile egos so they don't spontaneously decide to ruin the game. And now you have people playing from Russia/China/etc thrown into the mix with their >999 ping and it feels like playing multiplayer is a crapshoot for whether you're going to have fun or not.
Also game tastes have changed and a lot of games are designed around team comp/working closely together now and it gives people an opportunity to blame other people. If someone talked poo poo to you in Quake it was either because they were really good and were destroying you or they were really bad and had to try to own you in chat instead and either way it was funny. In Overwatch/dota/w/e they're talking trash cause they're losing and genuinely mad and wanna take out their aggression on a teammate.

It's a design problem. Designers need to be more mindful of what kind of lens their mechanics will encourage other players to be viewed through, IMO. At least if they're trying to make a social game. It's probably okay in Hardcore Electronic Sports Games for that lens to continue to be "I'm not bad at this game, it's just that I got put on a team with human garbage" as it tends to be now.

While there are things you can do to mitigate it, I think the structure of team-based competition itself will just always make it easier and very convenient to displace blame onto others, usually strangers on the internet that you don't care about. I think this manifests in the overall tone and discussion of the game itself even, if you compare the way FG/RTS players talk about themselves to say a MOBA community. There's a certain learned humility that comes from getting beat down in 1v1 over and over again.

Overwatch is kind of interesting because it doesn't have a scoreboard but it has these medals for each stat like kills/damage done/healing. So pretty much everyone can hit tab during the game and see 'I have the gold medal in ________, it's everyone else in my team that's playing badly'

I think the idea was to keep people from masturbating over their K/Ds but the result is people masturbating over gold damage when that's even less meaningful than K/D in the context of an objective-based shooter

No matter what he was doing, Chain Reaction always prided himself at being the best at it. Despite his impressive skills, though, the two chainsaw swords he regularly wielded tended to scare most people away. As a result, Chain Reaction was often lonely. But that all changed the day he witnessed a group of young dwarves getting picked on by an evil gang of ninja rats, the dwarves looked at Chain Reaction as their hero, and followed him everywhere he went. While Chain Reaction appreciated the company, he knew that he could not protect them forever, so he decided to teach them all he knew so that they could one day protect themselves. Sometime later, Master Eon heard rumors about dwarves from a small village who had successfully defended themselves against a large army of ninja rats thanks to the teachings of a great master. He knew at once that he needed to find Chain Reaction and make him a Sensei.

The best decision Destiny ever made was to prevent voice chat between matchmade randoms. Only players who mutually agree to it can hear each other, which makes it more or less impossible to get screamed at if you don't want to and don't go to the trouble of opting in to public voice. You still see the occasional lonely "xxxWeedNazi420xxx has joined the public chat channel" message, but hardly ever more than one per game so they're still just screaming into the void.

The first time I played Overwatch one guy on my team wouldn't stop whistling and it took far too long for me to figure out how to mute him, weird since the rest of the game is so slick.

Overwatch does this also, but it doesn't help because none of the tips are useful.

Dark Souls, of all games, also does this. There's an option in the menu that nobody ever touches for at least 2 and 3 that allow voice chat over mic during co op, invasions, and the arena, complete with a special unique hud icon that appears over your head and theirs. I always turn it on because it sounds fun/funny but I've never found a single person who did the same in several hundreds hours of playtime of both games.
