So I guess this is Hammond very transparently maneuvering (or being maneuvered) for a leadership bid once May has been fed to the wolves....

Bets on how long she survives?

After she survived the initial meeting with the 1922 group, I figured she would last at least a few months but with her piss-poor handling of grenfall... I doubt she has long.

I used to commute from Burnham to Staines. The journeys I needed to take took 4, 6 and 10 minutes respectively, and I would still have to leave my house at half six to get to work for 9

Same sort of boat as Rudd; it was a close call for her seat - like 1000 votes, with the Labour candidate gaining a 10% swing, while hers decreased by that amount. Also would be in the spotlight as an open lesbian potentially working with the homophobic DUP.

gently caress me, they pat themselves on the back about getting six "substantial" ratings. Every single one of them has to do with getting money out of the tenants. Health and Safety didn't do so well but look how well we can maximise cashflow.

e: tell a lie, two of them were for "Leasehold Consultation" which if the leaseholders there are anything like they are round here were mostly "Are we making the BTR landlords happy?" and Disaster Recovery. Hmm.

It'd severely piss off both the person who'd have to give up their seat (who'd possibly do something like stand as an independent and split the Tory vote) and the voters of Hastings and Rye, who would essentially be being told "you don't deserve to have the leader represent you, have this no-name instead".

Isn't it great to have a system where the executive is largely picked out of members of the constituency-elected lower house but we pretend like the government is a separate thing?

If they don't want to have a separately PR/STV elected leader of the executive then they could just pull a PM from the Lords, no chance of them losing their seat then.

I think this came up when news of the recount came to light, but it's possible for the candidates to request a recount - technically the Labour one could have requested one. It was a real tight thing - a difference of 300 votes.

Only twice; the seven times was a misreport.

300 votes is well within the margin of error for humans counting thousands of bits of paper by hand. When its tight you ask for a recount and everyone counts again to make sure everything is super correct and that made a few simple mistakes. This is how things should be done. Don't be a dumb :tinfoil: idiot about this.

It's not like a bunch of sixth formers suddenly were given seats and control of the party; they just were uncertain about what side to back until the election where it became apparent there was a winning and a losing horse so for the most part they'll get behind the winner and enthusiastically supporting them when they want something done.
