If you look in the gallery, the only other thing the nail actually went into was his middle finger, so I dunno what the hell he was doing. Also the little bit was the ~safety~ gloves he was wearing.

Until I read otherwise, I always assumed that holding the trigger and going *smack* *smack* *smack* in quick succession was how nail guns were supposed to work because that's the only way I'd ever seen anyone use them.

Three-Phase posted:Check out this wet charge For some numerical context: when water turns to steam, it expands to about 1700x its volume. So one litre of water will turn into 1700 litres of steam. That means that a single 591mL (20-oz) bottle of water, if thrown into that crucible of molten steel, will instantly expand to a cubic meter of gas -- approximately the size of a refrigerator. Kaboom

Does "wet charge" refer to fluid accidentally having built up somewhere on that converter, or what happened there? Also, could the electro-experts in this thread put the forces at work in this video in perspective for me? I mean what kind of fuses/safetys/breakers/cables/electrodes/etc. does a 60 Megawatt furnace like that require? I can't imagine the scale of this at all https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=_j2jESz7Zl8

Duzzy Funlop posted:Does "wet charge" refer to fluid accidentally having built up somewhere on that converter, or what happened there? I can give you one neat fact about those furnaces: the huge power cables on the left side, which are about a foot in diameter and weigh dozens of tons, are not moving because of the movement of the head or vibration from the machine or anything like that. Notice how they move in opposite directions? They're moving because the electromagnetic fields they generate are repelling each other and pushing them around.

Duzzy Funlop posted:Does "wet charge" refer to fluid accidentally having built up somewhere on that converter, or what happened there? "Wet charge" means that there is water somewhere in the bucket that gets exposed to the molten steel and explodes on contact. The "charge" is the molten metal, it isn't referring to electricity in this case.
