If you look in the gallery, the only other thing the nail actually went into was his middle finger, so I dunno what the hell he was doing.

Also the little bit was the ~safety~ gloves he was wearing.

Probably holding the trigger down and smacking the front of the nail gun against things to get it to fire, then hit the hand holding the timber instead of the timber.

Until I read otherwise, I always assumed that holding the trigger and going *smack* *smack* *smack* in quick succession was how nail guns were supposed to work because that's the only way I'd ever seen anyone use them.

Looks like it. I think that might be from the Falklands where they are/were mine clearing and to do that they have to dig up the entire beach as the sands have shifted.

For some numerical context: when water turns to steam, it expands to about 1700x its volume. So one litre of water will turn into 1700 litres of steam. That means that a single 591mL (20-oz) bottle of water, if thrown into that crucible of molten steel, will instantly expand to a cubic meter of gas -- approximately the size of a refrigerator. Hi there, would you like to try some spicy products?
Does "wet charge" refer to fluid accidentally having built up somewhere on that converter, or what happened there?

Also, could the electro-experts in this thread put the forces at work in this video in perspective for me? I mean what kind of fuses/safetys/breakers/cables/electrodes/etc. does a 60 Megawatt furnace like that require? I can't imagine the scale of this at all

I can give you one neat fact about those furnaces: the huge power cables on the left side, which are about a foot in diameter and weigh dozens of tons, are not moving because of the movement of the head or vibration from the machine or anything like that. Notice how they move in opposite directions? They're moving because the electromagnetic fields they generate are repelling each other and pushing them around.

"Wet charge" means that there is water somewhere in the bucket that gets exposed to the molten steel and explodes on contact. The "charge" is the molten metal, it isn't referring to electricity in this case.

There's a nuclear power plant a few miles down the road from me. It could only supply juice to 8 or 9 of those furnaces at once.

There's also a NUCOR recycling mill that has one of those furnaces and they have to call the utility co. before they turn it on.
