I wonder how the announcement of the Las Vegas Raiders may have impacted the G'Knights' draft strategy.

If you had the only pro sports team in town then all options would be on the table:

- Draft a few "stars" like MAF for marketing and/or pick up several veterans for a potential WC push early on;

- A mix of option 1 and some youth, backroom deals for picks, and veterans that could be flipped for more assets;

- Focus entirely on the long-term of youth/picka/assets and possibly be terrible for the first few years.

The nascent fanbase of an expansion franchise in a "foreign" sport will only have 2 (max 3) years to grow before a historic NFL team with a playoff-caliber roster rolls into town. Sure, tickets may sell regardless due to casino promos and curious tourists, but a pro team needs a core loyal fanbase for the long haul. The first half of the NHL calendar will be swallowed up by NFL action, and if the G'Knights are doing poorly at the midway point then how many fans will be gung-ho for the back half?

Do you think that may prompt an aggressive "be not-terrible now" mentality when drafting, or would you wager that patient development of the on-ice product will win out?

(Oops, though I was in the Expansion thread. Will leave it here and x-post as well.)

It's also possible they convince him to waive for a trade but currently he has only allowed it for the draft.

My boss mentioned that Philly is apparently inquiring about sending their pick to LV for Fleury? Not sure where he got it. That would be very interesting, though.

While I'm here, what's Blues fans take on Ivan Barbashev? He seems like he could be a top 6 after he develops to me.

Why would an expansion team want a 3x Stanley Cup winning goalie and Face of the Franchise type player who is still in his prime and who is also universally adored by everyone except cynical goons? Weird

He's not in his prime, he's been the backup for 2 of those wins and he was never the face of the franchise. He's old and expensive while good locker room guys come cheap. I also don't think you could lure the casual Vegas fan with Fleury, although that's true of any guy who was exposed.

e: the worst part about Mrazek is that he'll probably end up being a middling goalie (with flashes of brilliance) that'll give the "Ken knows something we don't!" thumpers fuel to the fire a la Brunner, Leino, Marchenko, Pulkkinen, Williams, etc. while they all conveniently ignore that at the time of their departure, they all possessed some level of tradable value and Holland gave them all away essentially for free because he has absolutely no concept of asset management

add Filppula and Hudler to that list of "etc."

oh but we were contending for a cup!!! we couldn't possibly trade them before the playoffs!

I'm fine with keeping him if they take Hagelin instead. Gotta clean up the budget somehow.
It would be very weird given the narrative out of Pittsburgh all the same. MAF seems convinced he's going somewhere.

Remember that Holland let Filppula go because of the same things he doesn't like in Mrazek, and used that money to instead sign Stephen Weiss.

Also, Filppula was immediately signed by Steve Yzerman

Nah he needs to go. We don't need all that money tied up in a backup goalie. Obviously it worked out this year but 9/10 times that's just wasted cap space.

Looked brilliant at times. I think he will be a solid 2nd liner in the next year or two.

You'll take the ride to leave this town along that yellow line

couldn't vegas just wait until after expansion and then deal with him as a UFA?

hifi
Jul 25, 2012

in a vacuum i wouldn't want fleury because he's less likely to be a tradeable asset down the line unless they can flip him right away which doesn't really make any sense, and if they do keep him then he's probably not helping them tank, although it's not like mike smith was the one saving the coyotes from losing the lottery.

none of the other options look real great either though, so maybe he is the best possible choice.

yes, but they can also talk to him right now which gives them a head start. vegas signing a ufa now would be stupid because players are like a week away from free agency so they aren't getting a discount and they lose their pick if they sign him

Not wholly stupid because having them locked in might change your decision making on other picks. Probably stupid if it's Kris Russell though.

COACH TOTORO SAY REFEREE CAN BANISH WHISTLE TO LAND OF WIND AND GHOSTS!

It's sad and all but I'm honestly surprised that more teams don't do this. The NFL and MLB, for example, are absolutely ruthless about getting rid of "fan favourites" when they can no longer meaningfully contribute or are overpriced.

NHL rosters have more room for meh players though because of how bad most 4th lines and 7th dmen are. NFL and MLB rosters don't really have room to use guys in the same way.

Like Doan is still good enough for most teams 4th lines at the very least.
