Too bad the forwards suck.

Cammaleri is good if he's healthy. Vegas is going to struggle to score and he can help there, plus probably be an asset flip next season. Bennett is a waiver wire player.

Dumb questions: Since we have to take 30 guys and max roster size is 23, are guys going to get taken then cut or stashed right away? That seems lovely for those guys if so.

I had the faintest hope the Canucks would expose Brandon Sutter. I guess on the plus side he wouldn't have been taken anyways.

Exactly what that means is delightfully unclear but it probably has something to do with protecting Vatanen and Manson.

If I was a team, especially one of the Pacific teams, I sure as hell would try and get Manson or Vatanen (preferably Manson) by giving Vegas a lot more than what the Ducks are willing to give up. At worst you force the Ducks to pay a lot more, which isn't a bad thing at all.

Vegas supposedly has deals with Ducks, CBJ, Isles (protection money) and BHawks (Kruger dump). Vegas getting more picks is good, but theyre low picks in a middling draft. 2018 is allegedly the deepest draft in a few years so I wonder if Vegas can swing those picks instead.

The fact that this is linked to the NHL Awards means that it's going to all be announced in the most idiotic way imaginable. Probably one selection before each ad break to make us watch the whole dumb ceremony with the more popular teams coming right at the very end. Plus it's the NHL so it's going to be so shoddily produced you'll wonder why they even bothered. The guy famous for being Sofia Vergara's husband is hosting so presumably will be responsible for butchering a lot of their names. They couldn't at least have booked someone on the B list at minimum for the big reveal for their new team in their new city? ThinkTank fucked around with this message at 15:30 on Jun 19, 2017 |

As a Rangers fan, I am glad to see the Islanders making dumb moves. Looks like CBJ is going to let them pick William Karlsson, which is probably a really good move for their franchise. He's 24, has been defensively responsible in a bottom six role for two years, and has respectable production (25p, 22 ESP in 13:23 ATOI). He's similar to Oscar Lindberg - both are reliable two-way centers on teams with a logjam of forward depth. The expansion draft is thin at center, and the floor for Karlsson is continuing to be a good third line center. Worst case, he's young enough that he'll still have roster+trade value in 3-4 years when Vegas is first getting a look at how their franchise is shaping up. That being said, with no side deal for the Rangers, there's a high change Vegas takes either Grabner or Raanta and flips them to another team, rather than trying to make the best team they can right now.

I wonder how the announcement of the Las Vegas Raiders may have impacted the G'Knights' draft strategy. If you had the only pro sports team in town then all options would be on the table: - Draft a few "stars" like MAF for marketing and/or pick up several veterans for a potential WC push early on; - A mix of option 1 and some youth, backroom deals for picks, and veterans that could be flipped for more assets; - Focus entirely on the long-term of youth/picka/assets and possibly be terrible for the first few years. The nascent fanbase of an expansion franchise in a "foreign" sport will only have 2 (max 3) years to grow before a historic NFL team with a playoff-caliber roster rolls into town. Sure, tickets may sell regardless due to casino promos and curious tourists, but a pro team needs a core loyal fanbase for the long haul. The first half of the NHL calendar will be swallowed up by NFL action, and if the G'Knights are doing poorly at the midway point then how many fans will be gung-ho for the back half? Do you think that may prompt an aggressive "be not-terrible now" mentality when drafting, or would you wager that patient development of the on-ice product will win out? (X-posted from offseason)
