He really turned it around, using a Ryoken with a UAC/20 like it was meant to be. It was a really good job of salvaging a situation partway through. You know, as opposed to hanging in the back because he's "a major character"

You might even say that he stepped up in the pocket to make some plays, and put those quick passes where only the receiver could get them.

He didn't get killed, actually. He flipped out and quit mid-mission because he got blocked in by lights a couple times, after hanging back in his super short-ranged mech, and people clowned on him for it. It was actually those incidents that inspired me to do Madden (to show tactically what was going on in a lighthearted way).

I think it was thatbastardken who took over for him mid-mission and he did quite well.

IIRC that short-range profile is part of the reason he was "not sanguine about his 'Mech" - he said his preferred playstyle was to hang back with long-ranged weapons, shooting at guys who couldn't possibly shoot him back.

Which, to me, says he's a dude who probably liked to play a Hellstar.

There was an incident in #megamek where he wanted to test a custom against one of the channel regulars. The custom turned out to be some bullshit dual gauss/dual cERPPC tcomp custom assault. He also had a custom map to go along with it, which involved a giant hill and a river between the hill and the rest of the map. Needless to say, they never actually finished that game. Also needless to say, you're pretty spot-on.

I think it will probably surprise no one that this incident was also when our not-sanguine not-hero was banned from #megamek.

Oh god I forgot about that thing. Didn't it also have a single-hex wide winding path you had to walk up to get to his two-hex-wide little platform he parked his mech on?

You could get some MechBusters. Basically just an AC/20 strapped to a jet engine and most importantly they're like 400 BV a pop so you could field a whole goddamn squadron of the things.

Doesn't that suppose that the Kerensky Cluster bothered to recover non-military technologies after they did 200 years worth of Succession Wars in like ten years? The Clans have all their tech because they hosed off to a military depot world.

But they also understand how everything works and scientists are allowed to innovate without a Comstar death squad showing up. Also technology is technology; they know how to make spaceships, they've perfected human cloning, etc etc. Just because they focus on military applications doesn't mean the knowledge isn't good for anything else.

I mean, a Dire Wolf is actually a lot easier to take down than a lot of other Clan stuff, since it can't really go anywhere. Swarming with fast IS mediums/heavies is pretty easy to do. It was more than the dude deliberately designed the entire scenario so that there was no way he could even get touched and the OPFOR would just have to trudge at him and die so he could feel cool with his custom headcap machine.

My recollection is the match ended when his opponent (I'm like 99% sure it was Captain Foo) saw the map and called bullshit.

No, when they innovate on anything but military-related hardware, a Clan warrior who failed out of real Clan warrior training comes by and executes them for wasting resources on non-vital technology.

:swoon: Those are amazing! Even if they are "only" conventional fighters.

I love that the reason it was considered poo poo was because it didn't have VTOL capabilities, so when their 4 poo poo tier cheapo aircraft killed 7 mechs, some paratroopers took the airfield and they had to ditch. That's not the fault of the plane, you asshats. Get some guys with rifles to protect your airbase.

I felt bad for that guy because I thought it was his first time playing and he was in over his head. Like, the first time I played was here, and I definitely held back a bit and took potshots. Since it seems like it wasn't his first time...

Even some of the less beefy conventional fighters can be pretty scary once you start mounting external munitions. Strap enough RL10s to anything and it starts to get bonkers. I learned that lesson the hard way a couple times.

Yeah, a lot of modern IS warfare is preeeeeety incompatible with things you can't load onto and deploy from a DropShip. On the other hand if you're defending somewhere like Donegal, you have plenty of time and flat land to fill with MechBusters,

Mechbusters are a good idea with a bad execution. They're slow enough that recoil from the AC/20 can actually cause them to fall out of the sky.

Yellowjackets don't have that problem (but are much more expensive).
