It's not amazing, but Trahearne is dead and Scarlet is still dead and they've been sprinkling elements of GW1 lore into the post-Thorns storyline.

I thought GW2 was pretty good if you just wanted a big open world to gently caress around in solo. Which is really all I do with MMOs these days anyway.

Between it and ESO, they both look pretty fun for that sort of thing. I haven't really played much GW2 since release, and never played ESO (it's a game that I avoided since it was kind of bad at launch apparently), and was probably going to try one of them after I shotgun the Dragon Age series.

I was going to play Secret World Legends, but that is looking like it's going to be a steaming pile of garbage, just by looking at its thread.

Yeah, I played ESO recently and it was also good for this. Unlike a lot of MMOs you actually have to pay attention to your gear and build when leveling if you don't want your character to suck butt.

Yea, I've skimmed the thread too, and all the complaints seem to be about gearing up for end game content. The game sounds fun during leveling though, just a fun time killing monsters and poo poo.

It honestly is really good if you've never touched it before and can see everything as new. They just haven't added much in the way of meaningful poo poo over time, so if you've gotten through all of it and are just waiting on updates it's a predictable drip feed that doesn't even really feel worthwhile to bother with most of the time.

Expansion details leaked for it and it was... mounts? And that's all I can remember in the way of actual new poo poo that wasn't just more of what they've already got.

GW2 is a fun casual mmo, if you look for serious endgame or pvp it'll probably not hold your interest. Not enough to keep me playing permanently, but no mothly fee means you don't have to - I just pick it up and play a bit every few weeks or if there's new content.

ESO is very good for that because they patched in level scaling, which means it's the only MMORPG in the world where you can skip the bad newbie quest areas they designed five years ago and go right to modern content.

Yeah, that's my problem with it (bolded), really.

Though I should clarify. If what you want is open world loving-around, ArenaNet have actually been quite good at adding content recently. Each of their major content patches since Heart of Thorns launched (their "Living World" patches) has added a new open-world zone, with new events and world bosses. That's pretty cool! And a few of them added new ways to get around in the maps, too. I really can't fault them on that. If you like running around and doing open-world events in GW2, ArenaNet is working pretty hard to make sure you have a good time.

Thing is, it still all boils down to getting currency, and ultimately the cool things you can get with that currency are either really long-term rewards like legendary equipment, or were added years ago so long-time players either already have them or clearly don't want them. Plenty of new gem store outfits, though :v:

The new expansion is going to have mounts and more elite specs (which is good--expanding the options available to the existing classes instead of increasing the level cap is something I do like about the way GW2 does expansions), but beyond that we don't really know much. If they ever started bringing in decent five-player content again I might want to give the game another look, but as it stands, ArenaNet just isn't interested in the kind of things I'm interested in as a player.

TSW did some really great stuff with world building, story and all that. Its like Funcom heard all that poo poo Bioware talked about a "story pillar" with TOR and actually used it to build a novel and interesting game. Too bad the combat was so terrible, if they can fix that with the rerelease itll be a pretty solid game.

RIP wildstar losing their hardcore raiders to wow lmao. Was raiding(recently) in wildstar at the levels of mythic wow raiding. These guys mean business!

quote:

Hi there,

I am writing this mission statement in hopes of clarifying what Invective is, who we are, and what we plan to achieve in World Of Warcraft, and what we expect from our raiders. First things first, Invective is a US Raiding Guild located on the PvP Server Illidan. We plan to eventually give all other guilds a run for their money and clear content on a world first basis. We will require members to be able to take up to TWO ENTIRE weeks of work off per tier (not that the current mythic content would require you to do so, but we do expect you to be able to afford to day raid two weeks) A hardcore schedule would look like this : Tier drops Tuesday, we all get up bright and early for servers to come online, and raid all day with breaks, including a sleep break, Tuesday thru Sunday. Rinse & Repeat. This is subject to slight modifications depending on how we are doing on the tier.

Invective’s founders and core members all derive from Hardcore Raiding MMO Wildstar. We all have successful experiences racing for World Firsts with guilds such as Enigma. GM / RL Sky has experience theory-crafting, and making strategies. We believe in being honest with each other, and addressing player error straight on.

The point of this guild’s existence is as follows: Wildstar dying led to some Hardcore Wildstar raiders looking for a new wow guild. We have no interest in raiding our asses off to settle for some world top 10-20. We didn’t feel like we had a place in any other current US Raiding guild, as they all had things we didn’t like about them, for example Limit only day raids for a single day. We’re making this guild to race, and every week we will be bolstering the poo poo out of our roster, so be on point. It’s time for North America to get a hardcore day raiding guild.

Sky Moon,

GM/RL

because people want to be #1 at something. There's only 2-5 guilds now that really do this. And only two out of those five ever actually take first place. One is a European guild and the other is a Russian guild. Used to be more but they all quit because they realized they have to keep playing a ton after the instance is cleared from those 80 hours of gaming in the first two weeks. When before they got to only play 2 hours a week after the initial 80 hours of push.

It started spinning its wheels for years constantly refactoring already existing content instead of making new ones and then it got bought out by a chinese company to use it as a way to launder money probably.

Seemed like they were never able to find a way to monetize, mark kern wasted their investor money on frivolities like trying to start a pop star gamer girl group (including paying for expensive music production & promotional videos) and the infamous bus. They went so insane with expensive promotional stuff that I remember the live giantbombcast at GDC of all places joking that they were transmitting live from the firefall booth, because we all live in the firefall booth now, the entire world is just one giant firefall booth.

If they had a non-insane human at the helm, they probably could have used their runway to make things work. They had a seed of a really good idea when it first went into open beta, a decent open world PVE sandbox shooter with enough random human beings in the open world, and plans for open pvp areas, and territory control for both pvp and pve (I think it'd just be like instanced guild areas), some SWG-like crafting, but somewhat simpler & with the confusing edges sanded off. It was a decent, casual time. But then they started trying increasingly desperate things to monetize it, the game got really bad, and then they ended up selling to a chinese company & they made it even worse.

College Slice
Firefall was the big kick in the nuts for me I assume most of us had which said "only put money into EA games if you're prepared to never see it again". The game was good (at the time) and the bonuses were actually 'worthwhile' for a game of that style (unique and fast mount, permanent bonuses to exp and ores mined for your entire party, a huge chunk of their cash-shop money, really unique masks).

I deep-dipped the full $70 on Firefall back when the crafting machinery and stats-system was very different from anything else I'd seen. Basically you made all your own gear with various ores you mined (via an extractor which attracted enemies, Dune-style, so you had to plant your Thumper and then survive to extract your rewards) and which ores (and their quality) you used changed the stats of your item. So if you made an item with heavier ores it would do more damage but weigh more (all your powered suits had various weight limits), or you made a gun with lighter ones that had much higher rate-of-fire but less durability (which mattered because equipment broke forever after being repaired a certain amount of time).

The world was also cool, it was big and expansive and ore pockets moved around randomly so you had to hunt them down if you wanted specific attributes for your gear, and the alien enemy faction encroached on the world advanced or withdrew their borders as you fought them. It was actually quite a compelling gameplay loop of finding ore sites (via smashing a giant hammer into the ground to send out pulses), planting your ore extractor, surviving the bug waves, crafting your poo poo etc, and the presentation was just on the right side of cartoony to be charming without obnoxious (unless you really dislike a Hawaiian aesthetic). It had problems but if they had stuck with it it could really have found a playerbase. But welp they tore the entire thing up, multiple times. Changed the focus of the game from PVE to eSports, multiple times. Replaced the intricate crafting system with WoW-style tiers and recipes, multiple times.

It's all in various links (KERRRRRRRRN) but if you're talking about "MMOs that kind of almost did something but ultimately hosed up real bad" Firefall is up there with Wildstar. Last time I checked it's now an average F2P MMO with quests and dungeons and a regular exp-based levelling system.
