they're gonna do a phone bank for it, too.

not necessarily! try e-mailing them, ask if there's other stuff you can join in doing, or if they're likely to change their meeting days? Worst they can say is no.

Did a socialism happy hour. Tonight was announced on meetup and I met 3 people who showed up that were not yet members but found us on meetup and decided to meet some comrades. That's extremely cool and good and is quite inspiring that just tossing out a flag of "hey, we're socialists and we're going to meet up after work this day" results in new people showing up. Also met a Goon and acknowledged Goonness.

Stairmaster, join and email your local, depending on size of your local, they may have a bunch of smaller working groups or committees that will meet on other nights of the week.

We're preparing for our first General Meeting in Jacksonville, FL and I've been asked to deliver a brief on "What is the DSA?" I'm curious if anyone here has had to do something similar and what themes and points you hit on? You don't have to have given a formal address or anything, experience from a one-to-one explainer on the DSA would be helpful as well.

Our messaging cmte is currently creating a handout that does exactly this, but we have some introductory information as well.

We mostly stress that we're a furthering of progressive ideals and arguing that capitalism and racism are where the problems in our society comes from.

If you shoot me a pm I can send you what we got. We have a really kickass meeting handout template as well

My understanding is that there are specifically very few requirements or expectations of candidates that DSA locals endorse. Mainly because it's a big-tent organization, they want to be potentially inclusive of anyone a local could endorse, from a super-anti-gun-control maoist to an anti-cruelty, pro vegan pacifist social democrat.

Basically, check as many "qualities of a socialist" checkboxes you can, I guess.

Literally, their only requirement for a local to endorse is "identify as a socialist", and the local can endorse any candidate who does that.

We have three such candidates running for New York City Council- two in Brooklyn (Khader El-Yateem in the southwest corner, Jabari Brisport in part of Central Brooklyn) and one in the Bronx (Justin Sanchez in the north). I don't know if NYC DSA has endorsed Justin but they have with the other two, even though Brisport is running on the Green Party line.

So this thread has been around for a while now so I would imagine what I'm going to ask has already been asked and I apologize for repeating stuff.

What separates the DSA from other Leftist "third parties" in the US? Wiki has a list of several of them.

I'm in Fort Worth and the meeting spot for the DSA chapter nearest me is about 15 minutes away. I'm thinking about joining.

(And anyone who joins in on the STL-shaming on Twitter can gently caress right off.)
