Other than waivers, he's kinda at the mercy of the other GMs until he has a few years of draft picks. He should make good picks instead of nice picks to avoid getting fired for picking g a godawful team. But who am I kidding, even if he does pick a terrible team and get fired after a year or two he'll make it back again soon after for being such a nice gentleman.

Is there any penalty for GMs making moves that will gently caress the team several years down the line in today's NHL? Cap recapture penalties hand-waived away, mysterious illness/injury LTIR abuse, an expansion team that is willing to take on whatever crap your team has and/or ignore good young players from the exposed list in exchange for picks and bad players.
