I hate the stupid "unwritten rules" if you don't want a hitter to admire the dinger he hit off you don't throw a lovely pitch Or strike him out next time and flip your glove into space but don't be a whiny loser about it

He is a good one. 2 - He doesn't really, but almost no managers in the majors do. Advanced game theory would be you bring in your closer any time past the 6th inning whenever you have 2 men on base with 1 out or more, or after a leadoff walk or hit. Those are the highest leverage points in the game and its unknown if in the 8th or 9th if you will even end up with baserunners. Might as well use your best pitcher at the first sign of weakness.

I didn't watch most of the Cards game last night, but jesus christquote:Matheny does not know the purpose of the double switch, and hilariously, it worked out perfectly for him somehow. After Martinez pinch-hit, he took out Piscotty and kept Martinez in the game. Piscotty was in the 3 hole. We were potentially going into extra innings. Why the hell would you surround all your good hitters with a pitcher’s spot, where - with a short bench - there’s the danger that an actual pitcher will have to bat in an important spot. The other reason for a double switch is so a pitcher can go two innings, but I don’t want Brebbia pitching in the 9th inning of a tie game anyway when Rosenthal was apparently available. Martinez later scored the winning run so baseball does not care if the moves you make are smart or not. Get this man out of the dugout.
