This recent interview with him kinda captures what I mean. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=kjtP1OBBPe0 But, then again, he made Planetary Duality so, as far as I'm concerned, that pretty much entitles him to do whatever the gently caress he wants.

First day of Copenhell done! Had to volunteer all day in order to afford it, so missed Saxon, Carcass, Invocator, Prophets of Rage and System of a Down. Sounded dope from down in the kitchen, though. Tomorrow I shall have to pick between Candlemass and Five Finger Death Punch. Probably going with Candlemass, since it's much more my genre and FFDP apparently has issues.

Tias posted:Sorry if these are dumb questions, but.. is it folk metal if it's just black/power-ish stuff with some older instruments? That's weird, I tried the link again and it starts at the first song which is my favourite from that album. It goes from 1:16 -> 8:26 ( "Forged by Fire and Stone" ). Direct Bandcamp link: https://duskmourn.bandcamp.com/track/forged-by-fire-and-stone That song is probably the least "folky" on the album though, more Amon Amarth than anything I suppose only not boring - there's some flutey/violin/chanting starting about 4 minutes in. RE: "Folk metal" that's a bit of a can of worms. EFFORT POST BELOW: It's often used interchangeably for 2 extremes of bands: -Those that base all of their song structures and melodies ( and often instruments ) from a specific country's traditional folk music. All that really makes it "metal" is usually the inclusion of an electric guitar with distortion. - Those that are basically just power/death/black/[XYZ] metal but they have a flute play for 10 seconds in the middle of a song. Those are the 2 extreme ends and usually there's a lot of bands that fall in between those 2 extremes. The country will determine what it sounds like too - Scottish folk is obviously 90% bagpipe, Irish folk is 90% tin whistle, Scandinavian folk always has mouth harps and usually something specific like a Nickelharpa, Mandolin, or other similar-but-different variations ( like versions of bag-pipes, tin whistles, etc ) and usually chanting/shouting, German naturally sounds like Oktoberfest music ( accordions etc ), most middle-eastern bands will utilize an oud, nay, or qanun, Chinese bands will include an Erhu, the list goes on. This is a perfect video for this discussion - a REALLY great spread - it's 12 minutes but it goes through 18 different "Folk Metal" styles across the world: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=pV_vRC0FnHk It's mostly pretty accurate I guess but not exhaustive - there is no Chinese folk metal on there for example and "country-western folk metal" is a BIG stretch. For example one of my favourite bands: VERY Folk but kinda Death - Danish - Svartsot: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=vhtd7h5w2mM Everything from the melodies/scales, to the rhythm, to the instruments that make appearances. But, it's also pretty clearly deathy ( vocals, guitar tone ). SORT OF Folk but mostly melodeath - Duskmourn. For myself, I'm lazy and generally refer to something like Duskmourn as "folky" - they use some of the trappings of folk - chanting, flute, violin ( although I'm positive they are just synthetic ), the occasional mouth harp, and have a focus on melody rather than brutality. Edit- I could provide a ton of examples of different country folk but most people wouldn't be interested and it would take a really long time. If you really care, that 12 min "18 styles of folk metal" video is a good jumping off point. TollTheHounds fucked around with this message at 21:01 on Jun 23, 2017 |

OK that 18 styles of folk metal video was wild. Reggae metal is the most absurd poo poo I have ever heard. I kinda dig that Flamenco metal stuff. I always wish these folk metal bands could somehow be metal without the guitars and distortion. I'd love to hear really heavy bands that are all traditional instruments- it's a little schticky to just do normal metal with a little traditional instrument in the background.

The Muppets On PCP posted:i like how it's basically the same riff but with a different country's stereotypical folk instrument playing a melody over top of it This is partially true of at least the first 5-6 minutes and maybe points out 2 things: 1) Most of the central/north european folk melodies probably originated from the same relatively recent sources and share a lot of similarities, only differing in the commonly used instruments ( and sometimes not even then ). That's why the Middle-East/Asian varieties usually sound markedly different ( including the differing instruments ) 2) That video would probably be better phrased as: Folk Metal as played by bands around the world. There's a reason that Equilibrium shows up in like 3 different styles even though they are themselves German ( they just love doing covers/instrumental variations of basically all of their songs ) Snowy posted:I always wish these folk metal bands could somehow be metal without the guitars and distortion. Not quite the same thing, but If you don't already you should follow Myrkur on Facebook because she regularly posts little 2 minute videos out in a forest or hallway/stairs somewhere with some weird instrument or just singing various Nordic folk melodies.
