If the border is hard wouldn't that effectively destroy Ireland as we know it though? I thought part of the point is how free Irish people are to move around the whole island

The common travel aspects are pretty much guaranteed to be maintained, the issue is customs controls and border points - which existed since partition until 1993.

People remember them being poo poo and know the economic effects of tariffs will hit us hard (again their have been historic trade wars between Ireland and the UK)

The only people that are going to blow stuff up about it are people already trying to blow up the police

Because we worked out the connection between bee murder and Nicotine based pesticides and banned them. Bare in mind that there are now over 500 peer reviewed papers and reports that prove this connection, and the people with a vested interest in these pesticides keep on rolling out the same few pet scientists with their bullshit "evidence".

Oddly enough iirc it was discovered by a school child who was doing a science project, it's really really not hard to prove. You could even do it at home if you own a net. You take some bees and put them in with plants sprayed with nicotine pesticides, wait a bit and then they are dead.

I'll happily admit I'm not a bee researcher and I've gotten most of my info from lurking the various science threads on SA, which pretty much all seem to say that neonics aren't the be all and end all of the problem at all.

That's a pretty awful experiment though, no control group and no given concentration for the pesticide make it pretty much worthless.

Edit: Not that I think they're going to break out the Armalites, mind you, at least not before things get a lot worse than they are now.

We had direct rule from 2002-2007 and the troubles didn't come back by anyone's account - ceasefires largely held, the real IRA tried some poo poo but no one was interested, the IRA robbed a bank to pension out their membership (though this is denied of course) but the principles underscoring the GFA held

Yeah there's very little chance NI goes back to outright violence but things are going to be a political clusterfuck. Non zero chance of a united Ireland at the end of it though which would be pretty crazy.

Why would you rent a luxury flat anyway? You're pissing above the average salary worth of money into a black hole every year.

Super rich people are extremely stupid with money.

I have a super wealthy uncle who is having to flee the country for 6 years because he hasn't paid any income tax basically in his whole life.
For fucks sake.
He's also being done because a ski resort of some kind he apparently runs legally doesn't exist and some guy just lost his leg there and it turns out the whole resort doesn't pay taxes either. OOPS!

Last time I went to visit that lot we were drinking heavily and I came into the kitchen and my girlfriend was completely destroying his Tory (ofc) ideology just by pointing out the amount of money an average person earns and has to spend on just living. He was in a drunken depression admitting "I fundamentally vote Tory because I'm selfish".

Not understanding economics and trusting tabloids has a lot to do with it, I suspect. The idea that we've been lied to for years and that austerity really is to line the pockets of the rich, rather than a harsh necessity that these naive coddled youngs just don't understand, is quite a tough pill to swallow. No-one likes to admit to themselves that they've been conned.

Government withdraws claim that 600 tower blocks have Grenfell Tower-type cladding

The government has now clarified the line given out at the Number 10 lobby briefing about 600 tower blocks having cladding similar to that used on Grenfell Tower. (See 11.53am.) The spokesperson used the word “similar”, but that was a mistake. The government is now saying 600 is the figure for the number of tower blocks with cladding of some kind.

A communities department spokesman said:

The situation is that 600 buildings have cladding. It is not similar, it is all types of cladding. Of these 600, we want landlords to check if they have aluminium composite material (ACM) cladding. Of those 600, some of those would have ACM; we want to test them to see if they have ACM.

Well that's all right then.

Obviously sinn fein wouldn't want direct rule to last forever but a period of it would probably help improve their political position within NI. People are more likely to listen to a nationalist message when being ruled by an English minister in Westminster.

This in my mind is one of the most damning indictments of capitalism as a hierarchy that exists. What's the point of having a system that allows people to accumulate wealth through exploiting the labour of others when the people who have accumulated the wealth are still loving miserable?

Because money is the thing that incentivizes job creators to work harder and innovate. As compared to paups, who are only motivated by threat of punishment.

Alternatively, because what other systems are there? You want Juche? You want Nazis, who were definitely socialists? That's the only alternative to capitalism which has existed since the first caveman exchanged a fish for a short position on bonded fish futures and certainly wasn't a recent introduction.
