I don't believe the Celtics will make a move before the draft tonight but I think you'll be able to tell the intentions by their pick

If it's Tatum, they're sticking with him and there's not likely to be much trade drama beyond trying to get rid of a contract for a max

If it's Jackson he's going to be dangled as trade bait for the entirety of free agency and it's going to make me keel over from stress

I knew that Kobe was drafted 13th, but I had no idea that Karl Malone was drafted 13th. And Stockton was 16th the year before. Whoever made those picks deserves to be in the hall of fame. How could 12/15 other teams miss these guys?

I'm old enough to remember those Finals against the Bulls. How did these two guys never win a ring. Boggles the mind.

the best thing about this is the gaping hole where Anthony Bennett goes

TBF Kobe didn't go earlier because he made it clear that he wanted to play for the Lakers hence the trade from the Hornets for Vlade.

I have no idea what the scouting looked like in the mid-80s but Stockton was a 6'1" unathletic guard who really only had one fantastic year at Gonzaga. Malone came from Louisana Tech and was sorta noteable for getting worse each year in college, his final year stats were not mind-blowing.

I mean, all credit in the world to Utah for picking those guys, but I don't see how either of them would be on the top of draft boards with any scouts. The draft is funny like that.

Why on earth would New York want good, young talent.

Malone dominated a 3 time consensus All-American Wayman Tisdale in the NCAA's. OU had better support players, Louisiana Tech were trash. It was obvious from that he was next-level talent, he was a beast. Kobe, iirc, was an unknown child of huge potential except for some tryouts.

The importance of this mission cannot be overemphasized
Portland currently have $140.5m salary on the books for 2017-18. That is $21.5m over the luxury tax and puts them in the highest category of taxpayer $3.75 for every $1 over. So they are currently due to pay TWO HUNDRED MILLION DOLLARS* for exactly the same squad that went 41-41 last season and got swept in the first round.

Is anyone going to bite on Allen Crabbe ($74.8m, 4 years) or Evan Turner ($70m, 4 years) packaged with the 20th or 26th pick? Are they even going to have to throw in the 15th pick to move some salary?

*$199.94m to be precise

With a lot of big new-money contracts out there, most teams looking to compete and the cap coming down there might not be many buyers in general

Probably TWolves now that Pekovic is off the books. I dunno if Thibs wants a salary like Crabbes though, especially as they have a lot of young talent already so probably wouldn't value a late pick.

Crabbe is the only guy that other teams might want but that deal is still not that appealing and teams that could absorb the deal are probably more content with trying to find a cheaper version in the draft

Yeah I forgot to mention Crabbe's 15% trade kicker, which makes taking him on even more painful. Portland is just so screwed cap wise for the next three years - they have $117m on the books for 2019-20 already. And that's not even including whatever deal they sign Nurkic to, whose contract expires next summer. If they can't move anyone this summer or during the season then the repeater tax implications for them will be egregious. All for a slightly above average roster.

The endgame is a Lillard or McCollom trade, it's inevitable. Maybe even this year at the deadline.

Yeah I remember feeling ok in the end about Crabbe. He obviously didn't live up to the contract. I couldn't believe the Turner contract at the time and it's only gotten worse. I really don't see how they sort the cap situation out without trading Lillard or McCollum.
