When everything becomes political it reduces the value of that movement. I don't think it's a coincidence that BLM became marginalized the moment #woke slogans were printed on tshirts. To bring this back to the Handmaid's Tale, it's a mediocre dystopian novel that I think was more about the author trying to justify her kinky sex fantasies with adhoc political subtext. Besides the fact that it just wasn't very enjoyable when I read it ten years ago, the political nature of it really reduces its impact. The moment you realize the author has an agenda is the moment you stop reading the story and start analyzing every detail as a tool for that agenda. Besides making reading boring, it makes it impossible to enjoy a story for what it is. This same effect is applied to Ayn Rand, another mediocre author who is mind bogglingly popular because of her agenda and not because she had real talent.

it's not so much that every bit of culture having political undertones to it is bad than it is that every bit of "insightful" commentary on tv, movies, etc. are anything but that. if you've read one thinkpiece about the handmaid's tale, you've read them all i don't want to read articles like "The Patriots Have A Trump Problem" that just repeats what's already been written about Brady, Belichick, and Kraft many, many times. i want to read articles like one that talks about the division of black NFL players and white ones vis-a-vis trump. unfortunately, things like the former article (from SB Nation) take no effort to write, require little research, and don't need any input from anyone other than the author, so they're far more prevalent than the latter, far more insightful article (from Bleacher Report, believe it or not) which actually talks to other people and draws its conclusion from that get that OUT of my face has issued a correction as of 18:48 on Jun 22, 2017 |

The idea of that is silly to anyone that has grown up in a mega conservative christian part of the country. Sex is actually terrifying to them. There's a lot of repression going on within those communities. (Amish/Mennonite is where I was raised around. Good people, just man...really repressed). A more accurate sort of reality would be the "Escape from LA" scenario where they placed all the "undesirables" in some sort island like place because they've been shunned/cast out for their misdeeds. Because generally that's what happens if you're gay, or don't confirm to their lifestyle.
