If the liberal justices on the SCOTUS start retiring, I think that's the death knell for the country.

Roe goes, it reverts back to the states so some places will allow it and some won't and thus a bunch of people will probably die due to unregulated procedures and problem pregnancies, and surely the US right to life movement wouldn't be OK with that.

Right?

RIGHT?

I'm just saying, there's a nonzero chance Trump has a really toad penis.
If Kennedy quits knowing Future Disgraced President Trump has a clear path to nominate whoever the gently caress he wants, no amount of pontificating about "dignity" will salvage his legacy in the eyes of history.

I think that 1 is effectively complete abolition of insurance regulations and that won't fly, 4 is essentially that we must end medicaid and i don't know he can get that, its hard to tell what 2 is but it seems like it's block grants which i assume can't be gotten through. 3 seems like it has a lot of things they could easily throw in to give him a bone.

What most strikes me about this is he's clearly positioning himself to be able to say he negotiated, they didn't, blame them for the bill's failure. On the other hand, I don't think he wants to be the decisive vote killing this. I think its a good sign but i'm still inclined to think it's going to pass.

#2 seems to be Cruz signaling that he expects Dems to win the presidency in 2020 but probably not the legislative branch. Right now all the actual numbers for the per capita cap and the block grant are punted over to HHS to decide, so he wants to codify how the funding is calculated into the bill right now and not allow a Democratic HHS to walk back the Medicaid cuts.

I doubt Cruz gets any of this, but he'll likely vote yes regardless. I think Paul's a hard no since he's playing a different game than the rest of the Senate (needs to maintain his ideological purity so he can continue grifting libertarians out of their money, just like his daddy.)

it was fashionable for old school wealthy people to uplift the poor. whichever vanderbilt built the biltmore estate (tongue twister) tried to run it like an old school paternalistic european estate and so he sank lots of money into local education, job training, and industrial subsidies for the poor appalachian hillfolk. and dont forget that andrew carnegie spammed libraries all over the place

the early 20th century progressive movement had a lot of real lovely sides like eugenics and other top down elitist paternalism but the civil bureaucracy reformers were trying to build a better world even if they fumbled it often

Nothing new about this. When I worked at the Food Lion deli 11 years ago we were told specifically not to even heat up cold food for people, as it could cost us EBT eligibility. It's paternalistic, sure, but it's an old rule. Hot food tends to be more expensive and higher margin.
