Very consistently though they ham it up (redneck it up) really for their fans, and just kinda run an "EVERYTHING IS FINE. NASCAR IS GREAT" attitude.

The lone times I saw Fox actually do good work with Cup would probably be when they aired little mini-docs on FS1 about things ranging from the Aerowars or how the 1979 Daytona 500 helped make the sport a big loving deal. I imagine these are just left over projects from some former speed employees though.

Other times? It's down right embarrassing and it has like this "bad cartoon on cartoon network" sort of vibe. (Waltrip grid run for example.)

How Fox peddles NASCAR has been a significant factor in NASCAR's decline among people like me. Fox isn't there to cover a race, they're there to see how many advertisements they can cram down your throat. So off-putting to anyone with half their wits about them.

NASCAR is...by nature a very commercial sport.

But it felt that around 2005 or so it kinda changed from being one that revolved around motor oil, tobacco, alcohol, southern fried food chains, obscure brands and soft drinks to one that was wanting to get the money of soccer moms in suburban chicago or something.

I can certainly understand it.

I'm kind of a nerd about that sort of stuff. Just felt like there could have been better ways of saying Jimmie Johnson was the best in his sport honestly. People that are watching the race more than likely (god I hope...) know who Dale Sr., and Richard Petty are. Start with them. No need to compare JJ to other athletes in different sports (which they did do as well during that segment)

It's not the frequency, it's the invasiveness of them. They advertise the hell out of NFL games, but you'll never, ever see ad overlays or announcer sponsor plugs happen during plays as they unfold. There is also constant advertising during a soccer match, but it's always in the background. It's there, and you'll see it, but it's not the primary focus of the broadcast. NASCAR was the same way when the primary commercialism of the race was the cars themselves. Same deal: The advertising is here, you'll see it, but it's not the primary focus of the broadcast.

But then Fox showed up, and now they have to have graphics for every ad and sponsor plugs for every salable activity. For me, things started getting unbearable when they started adding sponsor overlay graphics to the onboard cameras. Um, I know that it's the Aflac car because I can see Aflac on the hood, but why are you blocking the view of the car with an Aflac on-board camera sponsorship graphic? Overkill much?

I mean, there's a difference between sponsoring a reasonable thing during the broadcast, like a race break or halftime show; or sponsoring something because it's been five minutes since the last time you mentioned a sponsor and you need to come up with A Thing to work that sponsor in. Fox passed the point of over-saturation long ago; the Daytona broadcast was about as bad as I think it could possibly get, ever.

The bottom line for me is, are the sponsors presenting the race broadcast, or is the race broadcast presenting the sponsors? Once the needle moves too far into the latter, then the race becomes less relevant.

It's the kind of thing that, if you were trying to get a brand new fan into the sport, would turn them off immediately. It's par for the course with what NASCAR has been doing over the last decade or so, though. They're losing fans and losing money, and every attempt they make to gain more fans or make more money just pushes fans further away.

If Steak and Shake wants to sponsor an in car cam? That's fine. Just don't take up half the screen. I think that's reasonable.

I think 'half way points", "race analysis", "race cams" are reasonable things to sponsor...but you kinda only need to do it subtly. This isn't the NFL where there are no sponsorship on the uniforms (well save for NIKE). You can kinda show the graphics on the car themselves and people will get the point.

"Long been a flow" is no excuse, the fact that it's been around for a while doesn't mean it isn't terrible.

It's kind of a weird thing to HATE of all things that can be annoying about TV race coverage. Do you hate that they are sponsored or hate that they do a run through? Clint Bowyer will have the 5 Hour Energy cam on board today. That phrase combined with an on board shot of the cockpit is "unbearable" to you? If it were, Here is Clint Bowyer's on board view today, would that be much different? They are going to run through the on board cameras either way so who really gives a gently caress if it is sponsored by Tropicana or whatever?

This is also annoying. Every time there is some sort of weird crash near the mid-back of the field and nobody knows why it would be great if they could just use that car's and surrounding car's on board cameras to piece it together but they only put like 9 on board cameras out there.

Really the ticker at the top blocks more of the view than anything else. That is one of my biggest complaints about this sort of stuff is how big the that leaderboard ticker is. I wish it were just a thin line at the top similar to the bottom ticker.
