Kopitar and Toews/Kane are on deals with a $10m+ cap hit that end in their late 30s so McDavid at 14 til 29 or whatever isn't that outlandish.

Isn't there a max single player salary under the cba? Like 20% of the cap or something?

Yeah I stopped maybe 2 years ago and started casually watching Sharks games instead (went to the final meet-up in Vancouver this season and it was great hahahaha). Sbisa still being on the dumpster fire team made me snap (and I'm loving gutted about Burrows too). I'll probably spend my time between the Sharks and Canucks. Also Edmonton continues to be bad at trades I see. Excellent.

If you want to win its not a bad strategy. Marchand took a huge pay cut for the Bruins too.

I mean don't get me wrong, McDavid has absolutely every right to ask for it and the Oilers would be absolutely stupid not to pay it, but it limits their potential during his most valuable seasons.

Considering McDavid still has one year of his ELC on top of his RFA years, what's the rush to sign him to a max contact? The Cap ceiling isn't really moving much and worst case you just match any offer sheet (lol) if he signs one.

I'm not clear on how the Oilers could possibly get a cap hit less than $14 mil unless you think he's going to take his prime 27 and 28 year old years at a lower rate?

7 years 10M/per seems reasonable to me. He's obviously better than almost everybody, with maybe the exception of Crosby and Kane (and I'd probably prefer McDavid for non-hockey reasons even if Kane WAS better) but you don't want to limit your ability to add players, especially when your D and forward depth still need some help.
