Played my first match yesterday in 8th edition. Lost, but only because it ended a turn early due to lack of time and me having to get up at 6 today for a worksession. I went with Tau, throwing down 5 Skyrays and 3 groups of pathfinders with rail rifles, so as to ensure mortal wounds all over the place. Worked pretty well against the plague drones I targeted, but as expected I then ran out of missiles in the first turn with not much left to break most heavier stuff on the board. I'd filled most of my side of the board with kroot , feeling more like an ork army than anything else, but that more or less worked out for me in the end. Darkstrider as expected still isn't great and got squished early on and ethereal invocations felt sort of pointless aside from the FNP one. Cadre Fireblades felt ok as cheap boosters for the pathfinders but beyond Longstrike there really aren't that many great HQ choices for Tau at the moment, or at least that's the impression I got from playing them. The regular old Commander might be the one exception if used as a missile boat and booster. Still not sure why broadsides cost as much as they do, so no chance of trying them out. Had a Shaper along for the ride with my kroot, but besides being cheap there really wasn't much reason to. It felt wiser to just throw the hordes of kroot at stuff and let them take the hit than try to keep him near other units since he dies way too easily to be any useful. My overall impression of the game was that Fast Attack choices are just better than most anything you can find in any other slots. Elites are too expensive or just don't do much unless you're bringing something like a ghostkeel, while Vespid, Kroot Hounds and Pathfinders pull their weight. For 9 PL a Skyray will most likely stay on the table for quite a while and if you fling enough Seeker missiles at a target you'll eventually bring it down no matter what it is. Kroot themselves make for much better stop gaps than they used to be what with how charging has changed.

Anyone tried loading up multiple units of 4 Zoanthropes with a Neurothrope each into Tyrannocytes and dropping them to Smite poo poo? Sounds kinda cool to me on paper, but I haven't actually tested Zoanthropes or Tyrannocytes yet since I don't own any.

I'd agree that they could've done everything they've done fluff wise minus primaris being their own unique unit. Updating model lines is not uncommon, and simply saying they are a new tactical marine release to coincide with the timeline push wouldn't of been that big of a deal. Most people would gradually update their marine lines.

I was skimming through the rules digest (waiting for my full rulebook still) and I couldn't find anything about Base Size rules: do they have any specific requirements in 8th edition? From what I heard (been out of the loop for a while) Chaos/Regular Space Marines are now coming on 32mm bases, instead of 25mm: does this mean that older based Marines need to be rebased on 32mm? Also, the new(ish) "Canoness Verydian" comes on a 32mm base, while they're still selling the metal SoBs on 25mm ones: should they be on 32mm or what?

I'm back in deep after a long hiatus. My old army is rotting in storage halfway across the country and I tried to pick up where I left off only to find that I didn't have the right matching color anyway, so I'm trying to settle on a new way to paint my mans. I think I'm getting dialed in but I'm interested in any advice people may have. This is intended to be a Fists successor chapter that was created specifically to babysit a forge world, and not Space Wolves as I was once accused of. If possible I want to retain some feeling of them being bros with the Mechanicum by having a relatively uncomplex color scheme that feels like a mix of Marines heraldry and "off the assembly line". An important part of my goal is to find something that doesn't take a tremendous amount of time per model, as I am itching to get in to a game at some point soon despite the efforts of my infant son to suck up all of my waking hours. My limited time and lack of pro skill means that edge highlighting is not in the cards and an airbrush is out of the question, but I want to find something that doesn't just look like a lazy drybrush with a wash. I started with Vallejo but am now using GW colors since that's what my local store carries. The original grey is on the armless dude, which I found after I'd finished a model to completion using what I thought were 100% matching paints. At this point I said screw it and decided to re-examine the entire idea since I know the scheme doesn't look great. I've gone through a couple of test iterations since that model which all look painfully similar in a thumbnail. Left to right: - Vallejo-alledgedly-match colors that are not a match, with a recessed Agrax wash. - Mechanicum Standard Grey & Kantor Blue trim with a heavy Agrax wash and a Longbeard Grey drybrush. - Mechanicum Standard Grey & Kantor Blue trim but inverted shoulder pad colors with a Longbeard Grey drybrush and medium Agrax wash. This iteration helps a lot with avoiding a big grey/metalgrey blob, as it opens up using the blue as an accent color on larger blocks or on models that don't have elbow/kneepads in a sane way. - Mechanicum Standard Grey with a layer of Dawnstone "wetbrush" from Duncan's newest video & Kantor Blue trim with Agrax in the recessed areas only (bronze on the chest is a test for character models). This needs a highlight of Longbeard Grey, but I like the resulting color a lot more so this is the current champ. Improvement has been made in each iteration and I'm definitely happy with the last round in terms of color fundamentals. There needs to be more accent color but I'll worry about that when I have a model that I'm ready to take to full completion. Is there anything I can do better for painting tactics, or any dirty hacks that will make my life easier?

Ahh, fair enough, so, my CSM Emperor's children stay on their 25mm bases, any new models I pick up for them (give me new noise marines dammit!) will be on 32mm, and, if the discrepancy makes me too much I can always rebase. Sisters of Battle will be one model on a 32mm base, the rest on 25mm, but Verydian's a centrepiece model anyway, so not so weird. I fully expect that, by the time I assemble a full army f SoBs made from Grishnak's sculpts, and the metal exclusives from the GW site, that'll be when full plastic gets released.

Well the hit rolls part is clear, but the issue is how this happens. The rule could be interpreted to mean any of: a) Do that many attacks for each attack you make with the flail b) Generate those attacks in addition to regular attacks c) Generate those attacks instead of all regular attacks like before (although this would clash with the mandatory Bone Mace attack). For now I'll probably just talk it through with an opponent and see what their take is.

So I played my first two games of 8th Edition today, a 50 PL game with my GSC and a 100 PL game with a small detachment of GSC and mostly Tyranids. Both games were against pure harlequins. Holy dang. I brought an exocrine and lots of rending claws and stuff and thought I was hot poo poo. Unfortunately everything in that army has a 4+ invulnerable save, all the flying transports and stuff are - 1 to hit, and they can always flee from combat, then shoot you, then charge. It felt like I had zero chance.

Not a lot at the moment, as the Indexes really don't give the individual Chapters their own special rules that tends to make them play differently on the tabletop. For the time until their codexes come out they're really just different colour schemes of Marines/ Dark Angels do get their specialist Deathwing and Ravenwing units at the moment however, and tend to play radically differently depending on how you build your list (Deathwing slow but nails tough, Ravenwing fast and precise, DA's in general play more shooty than vanilla Marines). When their special rules do show up, expect focus on Plasma, anti-Chaos, Morale and Overwatch specialities. Fists usually end up with rules relating to their expertise with Bolt weapons, stubbornness affecting morale and siege tactics.

It also doesn't have the Relic keyword so aside from being like 8-900 points for a mere 15 models of transport capacity it's sort of feasible to run.
