Been lurking both this and the British cartoons thread recently. Why is it that American political cartoons (either left or right) are so much worse than British in almost every way? Not funny, lazy art, over labeling, obvious and not-clever concepts.

Amongst other things, we follow a lot of "Wingnut Welfare" artists who realized that, as long as they said what their readers/publishers wanted to hear, they never needed to put in any effort. There's also the other extreme with syndication and figuring "bland and obvious" is the easiest way to guarantee sales. We also get some gems by lunatics who are the only cartoonist their regional paper can find, or put directly online without concern for sales or sanity.

Great av, by the way.

Because we've been doing politoons for longer than your country has existed.

As you can see, we used to be as poo poo at it as well. Give it a few centuries, you'll be alright.

I remember someone months ago in this thread (or maybe the 2016 version?) gave an answer that involved the differences in the employment model for American and British editorial cartoonists, but I don't remember it well enough to get specific and I can't find the post. Maybe someone else (or the person who posted it) can find it.

Gee, I wonder why this group of chronic, dysfunctional liars keeps insisting that something that isn't true actually is. We should take them seriously this time. Sure, they were wrong every other time in the last 20 years, but maybe they'll be right this time.

A lot of British political cartoons are bloody awful. People looking like they melted, intellectual bum jokes, political in-jokes that you only get if you went to public school, no actual point beyond "politicians are sleazy."They look clever if you are used to the very obvious American cartoons, but they are dumb in a different way.

The New Yorker cartoons are ok, although hardly always political. I feel as if in the US, political cartooning is for some reason considered the lowest form of cartooning and attracts the same. Much like the trades when comparing the US and Europe. Hell, even Penny Arcade has had a go at how shoddy political cartoons are many years ago: https://www.penny-arcade.com/comic/2009/04/01/the-way-of-all-flesh

Yeah that's why I don't say he's "the worst" because sometimes he points his raging misanthropy-boner at a deserving target without collateral damage, and cranks out a decent cartoon.

To explain some of this:

"Gonski" is short for the schools funding package proposed by in the Gonski review. The original version was under Gillard and a new "Gonski 2.0" passed the Senate.

"Finkel Energy Review" on energy security came out and is opposed by Abbott because coal.

The fence: Parliament House was designed with sloping lawns on top of it so the general public can walk over the politicians as a symbol of the relationship between government and the people. Now it's fenced off and out-of-bounds for security concerns, also symbolic.

Extinction for our time

code:
A child of flesh is loathsome and ill-tempered. But for what they lack, Karras has forged a child of metal that is constant, and true. I am that child.

The flesh is imperfect, it is unclean, it putrefies, but I am forged in The Builder's image: without... flesh.

Fire is The Builder's purification. Blessed are those who are born of the fire. The flesh is sinful. Woe to those who are born of it.

Blessed are those who have boilers, for they carry with them the purifying flame, and were made in The Builder's own image.

Blessed are the metal ones, for they were born of fire, and they alone are sinless.
