pales arent nonsapient, they're just extremely alien. arguably they're as close to the hot black flame as ebons, just in a different sense: ebons grow into extremely sophisticated individuals who have found their way almost entirely around the limits placed on them, pales are instinctual and seemingly mindless and extremely fenced in by the bounds of their purpose

The counting thing is actually a bit of folklore about vampires. In some stories, you could distract a vampire by throwing seeds or grains of sand or rice in front of it, and it would be compelled to count them.
