The right wing press likes to throw accusations about Marxism around because it works in the US. I'm not sure if anyone actually cares here.

I think that's partly why going further left isn't actually much of a problem electorally. There are people who hate socialism but they think of Obama and Hillary as mega-communists anyway.

And how long does it take to become a native, exactly? I mean some of the plantation settlers are 15 generations deep at this point. The Normans who some of the Irish brought in to fight their own wars were 30 generations ago. Do they count?

When the population in question has an ethnic, religious, and cultural identity in contrast to a majority indigenous population they're definitely not natives. You could have just as easily asked this question about the Pieds-Noir.

I completely agree, just wondering how many elections he'd have to lose before Pener sent him on a boat back to ?????? because clearly he was outside the socio-political milieu of the Republic.

The extreme ultra-Irishness of the hard Republicans in Northern Ireland and the ultra-Britishness of the hard Unionists is both pretty obviously compensating for something.

And that something is that they have more in common with each other than they do with the national allegiances they profess.

well i don't know for sure but take away the flags, colors and etc. etc. and what's there? a shared history, for one. and if they live in belfast they live in the same city! northern ireland seems weirdly fossilized with the hard edges of both groups holding onto nostalgia while the parent countries mutated into very different images than what's portrayed in republican/unionist propaganda and the like.

Nah, only the Protestants. A great many Irish have British ancestors from separate waves of British colonization going back to, what, Henry II? But they're Catholic or indifferent, and Catholicism is the true test of an Irishman.
