Tbh I don't really think the tapes exist, or that he was really aware of any at the time. But yeah, even if they did exist we certainly aren't going to see them anymore.

What this means is, someone else created them and is keeping them (or recently got rid of them) when it was determined that the contents of the tapes made him look super loving bad.

Those tapes absolutely existed and we'll absolutely never get to hear them.

While I don't doubt that really happened, I'm going to say they never existed, not because Trump is playing 11-dimensional chess, but he believes he was, but it was such a blatant ruse that Comey (and most people) saw through it. It's the equivalent of "my uncle works at Nintendo" to shut down an argument and prove him right, but then Comey actually has photos of him and his uncle, in Nintendo overalls and name tag, in a factory in Japan with Shigeru Miyamoto and has an unmarked beta version of Super Mario Bros. 3 for playtesting.

Also, it's natural now for Trump to do something without realizing that it has legal ramifications. If those tapes existed like he claimed, he would have to turn them over as part of the investigation. If he destroyed them because of incriminating evidence, then he's destroying legal evidence. It would have been better off to never claim the tapes existed or, if they did exist, never acknowledge their existence before leaking them to the press to counter Comey's claims. But Trump being Trump, he couldn't do both of those things.

I hope this kind of thing cuts through for sure, but on a small note lol at "-15%" next to an arrow pointing up. Language like "reduction in subsidies" next to an up arrow representing increased costs overall (but no actual text saying that) is way more confusing than it needs to be

This is definitely not true, there was a wide understanding that the Great War hadn't fundamentally changed anything, and that a second war was very possible, particularly after Hitler was elected. Part of appreciating risk is recognizing the various degree of threats. Realistically the possibility of a worldwide war is very low, in particular because the US has the only significant naval fleet. The world wars were predated by military buildup on all sides.

Sure there was a wide understanding, but nay-sayers also existed.

I wasn't talking about the likelihood of a world war, he was talking about the possibility of a conflict with China. I only brought up WWI to highlight the ridiculousness of the assertion. Given the drastic military build up in the South Pacific and increasing tensions in the region, particularly with Japan, it's not something that can be completely ruled out especially considering that we are obligated to assist them if they go to war.

The U.S. political system for all practical purposes ceded authority for war starting to the executive branch about half a century ago, we technically haven't been in a "war" since, just a series of police actions leading to quagmires.

2001 AUMF against terrorists. Iran gave funding to militarnt groups in Iraq, ergo we can invade their country without provocation.

I doubt they will actually do it however. That poo poo would spell the end of the Trump administration, and they have to know it. Americans had to be coerced and decieved into Iraq by the threat of WMD's, and no one is buying that poo poo if 9/11 isn't fresh in their minds.
