There's no way in hell I'm going to click a link to the Sun, so I'm going to guess that a Syrian refugee beat his wife with a hockey stick?

Considering that's what, 1 out of 35,000?, I'm pretty sure that's a significantly lower rate of domestic violence than in old-stock Canadians.

Statistically that's about an order of magnitude less than reported DV rates as a whole in the country.

But the Sun needs a minute of hate.

Understandable.

Purportedly, the writer of this idiocy is alarmist fuckwit Candice Malcolm, but I wouldn't be surprised if you told me she'd plagiarized it from Stormfront. Every sentence is its own paragraph because it's the sun, and to hell with fixing that here's some text

quote:

“Man who beat wife said he didn’t know it was against law,” read a recent headline in the New Brunswick Telegraph Journal.
The man – Mohamad Rafia, a Syrian refugee – didn’t just beat his wife, he beat her with a hockey stick. For half an hour.
Rafia told a Fredericton court that he didn’t know it was a crime in Canada to beat your wife with a hockey stick for half an hour.
Following the attack, Rafia’s wife was taken to a local hospital and initially lied to protect her husband. She later revealed that he beat her with a hockey stick – for half an hour – pulled her hair, hit her in the face and threatened to kill her.
Rafia was charged and pleaded guilty to assault causing bodily harm and uttering threats. He was sentenced to eight days in jail and one year of probation.
This shocking and disturbing story failed to make national media, but the Telegraph Journal provides the startling details.
Rafia was a privately sponsored refugee who arrived in Canada more than 14 months ago with his wife and children. He spoke to the court in Arabic and his testimony was translated through an interpreter.
“He was not aware of the law and he was coming from a background where the laws are completely different,” said the interpreter.
Man who beat wife said he didn't know it was against the law https://t.co/z8DDUaEhGl pic.twitter.com/K00jxasoVw
— The Daily Gleaner (@DailyGleaner) June 9, 2017
“Officials didn’t inform him of the differences in the law in Canada and that more should have been done to educate him,” said the interpreter. “Why didn’t they explain the law?”
The battered wife defended her abusive husband, according to a Fredericton police statement. “Being assaulted by her spouse is culturally accepted (in) the country they are from.”
Not only did these Syrian refugees claim to not know it was a crime for a man to hit his wife with a hockey stick, they also defended the abuse and tried to direct blame onto Canadian officials.
Worse is the fact that this wife-beater got away with his crime, and was given a mere slap on the wrist by the Canadian court.
In similar cases, a foreign criminal like Rafia would face deportation. In this instance, however, because he’s a Syrian refugee and because Canada doesn’t deport people to unsafe countries, we’re stuck with this foreign criminal.
That’s why it’s so important that Canada properly screen and vet refugees before they get to Canada. Kellie Leitch’s Canadian values test would have gone a long way.
Also outrageous is the fact that after having lived in Canada for almost a year and a half, it appears that Mohamed Rafia still doesn’t speak enough English to be able to say: “I didn’t know this was a crime.”
For 15 months, Canadian taxpayers have paid for Rafia to receive free English classes, on top of gold-plated healthcare and welfare benefits, so he can try to fit into Canadian society.
Instead, he’s brought the worst of his culture to Canada.
Prime Minister Justin Trudeau’s fast-tracked Syrian refugee pledge was designed primarily to virtue-signal and gain positive press for the rookie leader. While the mainstream media swooned over Trudeau’s selfies, both refugees and Canadians were let down by Trudeau’s ill-conceived and poorly implemented program.
Now we learn that one of these Syrian refugees used the iconic symbol of Canadian patriotism – the hockey stick – as a weapon to bring a barbaric attitude towards women to Canada.
A battered wife and a bloodied hockey stick. That’s the legacy of Trudeau’s Syrian refugee program.

also lol that the "iconic symbol of Canadian patriotism" is a hockey stick

quote:

Katy Stubblefield, born and raised in Oklahoma, thinks of herself as a blue dot in a red state and is escaping up north to Canada with her husband, three boys and two cats.

As a liberal family, they feel out of place in the conservative state, she told CBC's guest host of On The Coast Gloria Macarenko

"There is a lot fo stuff that is scary," she said. "People take their guns to the grocery store around here."

The stay-at-home mom reached out to Vancouverites on Reddit for advice about moving to the city this week and quickly received more than a hundred comments.

Advice from Reddit

"Don't trust Google to tell you how long it takes to get from place to place" was a common pieces of advice she was given, Stubblefield said.

She was also warned about the cost of living in Vancouver and told to cut costs by only bringing one car.

"That would be okay if I were close to transportation and civilization," she said, mentioning that she's heard it can be difficult to find housing in Vancouver.

Another common warning: the weather. But Stubblefield said she is not fazed by the reports of rain.

"I'm one of those people when it's overcast and it's drizzly, that to me is peace," she said. "I'll bring my wellies and I think I can make it through the puddles."

To hear more about the advice Katy Stubblefield was given and why she is leaving, click on the audio link below:

No problem fitting in

Stubblefield said she thinks her three young children will fit right into Canadian society.

"My husband has told my son about the double-double [at Tim Horton's] and he is really excited about it," she said. "As for hockey, they already enjoy hitting each other with sticks so I don't think that it would be that far of a stretch to strap some skates on and teach them how to hit a puck instead of each other."

Stubblefield won't be able to continue working as a X-ray technician in Canada because her credential aren't transferable.

Her husband has secured a job in British Columbia though and the family is planning to move to Vancouver in mid-August.

The family of five will move to Vancouver in August and hope that Vancouver will provide more opportunities than Oklahoma. (Katy Stubblefield)

Worth the risk of moving

It's not the weather or the commutes that Stubblefield fears, she said, but leaving family and friends behind. But she is convinced the move will be worth it.

"There are so many different reasons," Stubblefield said. "Of course, the political climate. We're the buckle of the Bible Belt and it's not always very welcoming."

Her biggest concern, though, is her boys' future and education.

Stubblefield said the education is so "dire" that she ended up taking her children out of school to teach them at home. She compared that to what she has seen of Canada.

"From what I've experienced with Canada, they seem to want to invest in their citizens and they value their citizens," she said. "I really want that for my boys."

Could some people in the know please explain to the thread what would happen if some of us left leaning posters decided to actually stop complaining and do something about the NDP?

What would happen if for example people like Helsing joined the NDP and tried to run for high office? Could it be possible for a few individuals to move in favour of legit socialism instead of this ineffectual milquetoast nonsense?

NDP have huge internal party filtering system that does everything it can to make sure leftists are marginalized, silenced, and kept out of any sort of position of power or influence within the party. It's quite effective.

It really depends on the province. Provincially, some of the parties are small enough that a group of friends could actually materially make it better. Federally though, you would really need a social movement. Even if you take over a riding, and send a bunch of delegates to the convention to gently caress poo poo up your are 1/338 delegates.

Quebec is weird because they were so desperate for candidates for a breakthrough that some serious leftists filtered through, which is how you get things like tory media going apoplectic over the fact that a (Q) NDP MP tells it like it is about WW1 instead of joining the nationalist, imperialist pageantry that Canadian nationalism demands every year.

But at the same time the desperation materialized in Mulcair, who is basically a careerist opportunism elemental.

It is thoroughly uncontroversial to say that Hadith forbids homosexuality and explicitly says that homosexuals should be killed, and that the Qur'an its about as hard on them as the Bible is. Of course many Muslims are just as hypocritical as Christians, and similarly ignore it or pretend like their religion isn't a monstrous relic of a period of human history that we should be long past by now.

I mean any female Muslim refugees are still better off being abused in Canada than they would have been in whatever county they came from, so I don't see the argument against letting them in. This way their kids can grow up to abandon the ridiculous garbage that their parents believed in, just like most of the children of Christians, Hindus, Sikhs and other Muslims who already lived here.

Yeah but her base doesn't tend to think of this in terms of the woman's point of view. They think of it as "we brought a wife-beater into this country, bad!" not "we brought an abused woman into this country, good!" Because fundamentally they think the man is more important.

Note, of course, that discursively the woman in this story, and in Leitch's chosen quote, is a "wife" rather than a "woman", i.e. she is fundamentally defined by her relationship to a man rather than being a person in her own right.
